A Day In November

By John Telfer

The guns have fallen silent

As the fields soak up the blood,

Amid the carnage of Flanders field,

They searched for casualties in the mud.

They fought for king and country

Those young men from outback towns,

they created a legend that’s here today,

But they’ll never again hear the outback sounds.

“We’ll help defend the empire!’

was the rallying call to arms,

Our nation’s youth were quick to respond,

As thousands left their jobs and farms.

The mothers at home were grieving

As they anxiously awaited the post,

The messenger of doom was unwelcome,

In that telegram they feared the most.

So, on this day in November

Let’s all offer up a prayer,

To honour those fallen soldiers,

Who’ll never come back to Australia fair.

So, rise up you sons of Australia

Let the TRUMPETS ring out loud,

For the sacrifice, you have made for us,

Has given us a legend proud.
