BATTERHAM SETS AN EARLY STANDARD

Hello World, Stanthorpe sponsored the Single Stableford competition at golfers played a Single Stableford on Saturday 18 played in Stanthorpe on Saturday.

good field was bolstered by a number of visitors . An early Benchmark of 39 points, was set by Ron Batterham. Ron, a former official starter for a number of years at the club says his golf has improved since retiring from the role. Obviously less stress is more conducive to a good score. That 39 points held firm throughout the day. The closest anyone got to it was 38 and Ron was confirmed the winner.

Eric Ree named the runner up after a countback. Other on 38 points settled for the run down.

Helen Hunt was the winner of the Ladies event returning an excellent 38 points for her round. Helen’s game is certainly improving with each outing since undergoing surgery some months ago. Hunt edged out Lisa Stuart who finished with 36 points, good enough for ladies’ runner up.

Nearest the pins at the par three holes went the way of Brendan McMillan, Hamish Adam, David Hunter (Tenterfield), Helen Jones, Lisa Stuart and Christine Hood.

Matt Burgess had best second shot at 1/10, David Lang at 5/14 and Scott Constable at 9/18. The birdies nest at hole one again went unclaimed.

In the run down, those with scores of 36 and better for the men and 34 for the Ladies each received a ball.

Next Saturday Two Ball Ambrose competition. The fundraising day for the Glen Aplin State School is open to all and it is not necessary to have an official handicap. A Handicap will be sorted for all players prior to play.

I understand there already some ex- students, old boys of the school who intend to play.

There is a nomination sheet for the day at the club so get arrange a playing partner and turn out for a fun day.

If you need, Clubs and hire buggies are available at the club, but get in early if they are needed.

BYRNES SHINES ON FRONT NINE

The Stanthorpe Sporters hit the front nine on Sunday morning. A cool morning was a timely reminder that a change in season may not be too far down the track. The early conditions were pleasant and the breeze helped beat the heat of the day which arrived later.

Terry Byrnes made a welcome return to the Sporters’ winner’s circle. Byrnes finished with nett 24 after a steady does it round. That steadiness helped a par at the third hole after getting nearest the pin.

Byrnes who is normally, very accurate with par three tee shots, but uncharacteristically has been off target lately, something his fellow competitors have been quick to point out.

On Sunday he proved the doubters wrong with a very good tee shot at the third hole. (Take that “doubters”)

Another bridesmaid finish for Dick Hilton who returned a nett 25 for runner up. He is getting closer and we fully expect to see him in the winner’s spot in the next few weeks.

The best round of the day belonged to Matt Waterworth who needed 40 hits for the nine holes. His overall total could have been better if not for a couple of wayward drives which found him in a little bit of trouble.

Sporters will gather again next Sunday morning ready to tee off at 8amfor the weekly nine hole competition and it is that back nine that will be in play this week.

Once again there is the normal open invitation for everyone to come and play in the competition.

MIDWEEK WIN FOR OLSEN

The Warwick ladies teed off on Wednesday (15/3) in the Pro Shop / Red Rooster Single Stableford but with a twist. Players were only allowed to choose three clubs and a putter from their normal bag of tricks.

During the round Helen Olsen found her good form. She may now be questioning why she ever purchased a full set of golf clubs, as she took line honours with 31 points, only using three of them.

Helen had to survive a countback with two others who played almost as well with their choice of clubs, Maria Carey and Jill Barnes.

While these three were happy playing with three clubs most of the remainder of the field realised exactly why they have a full set of clubs.

Scores for the rest of the field were Lyn McKillop (30 C/B), Roslyn Darton (30 C/B), Sharron Cooper (30), Carole Brandon (29 C/B), Narelle Norris (29 C/B), Mary Young and Lester (29), Yvonne Pinington (28 C/B), Patti Hemmings (28), Janet Davis (27), Margaret Adcock (26), Elizabeth Cockram (25 C/B), Tub Ingall (25), Di Johnston (24) C/B, Annice Payne (24 C/B), Janine Stewart (24), Majella Kahler (22), Michelle Wright (21) and Vicki Bennett (20).

Majella Kahler had the best front nine with a score of 17.

Helen, Judy and Maria shared the Pro Pin spoils.

McKILLOP HIT FORM AT RIGHT TIME

Saturday (18/2), the Warwick ladies played a Single Stroke off the Red Markers. Lyn McKillop played another great round returning an excellent score of 39 points.

McKillop is finding form and is figuring in podium finishes just in time for the championships.

Tub Ingall also played very well returning a very tidy score of 37 point Tub was named runner up.

Then followed Annice Payne (36), Roslyn Darton (35 C/B), Janet Davis (35), Molly Scotney (32), Maria Carey (31), Judy Lester (30), Margaret Adcock (29), Gwen Mills (28 C/B), Melanie McLennan (28), Mary Young (27 C/B), Carole Brandon (27), Yvonne Pinington (26 C/B), Majella Kahler (26), Jill Barnes (25 C/B), Michelle Wright (25), Helen Olsen (24) and Dianne Evans (18).

Molly Scotney, Melanie McLennan, Majella Kahler and Annice Payne shared in the Pro Pin.

Danielle Seibel had the best front nine scoring 19 points. Annice Payne, Lyn McKillop and Roslyn added to their gobble tallies.

The round was sponsored by Noo and the gang at One Table Café.

This Saturday, the Ladies will be supporting their hard-working Secretary Lynette McKillop who is sponsoring the Annual Secretary’s Pen day.

A reminder that the Ladies Championships are coming just around the corner; played over the first two weekends in March.

The Ladies always enjoy the experience and the camaraderie after the four rounds is awesome. If you are unable to play all four rounds, be sure to be at the club for the final holes of the final round on Sunday (12/3) and help celebrate the skilled golfers and the winners.

Another great week for the ladies. Remember – If you hit it right it’s a slice; if you hit it left it’s a hook; if you hit it down the middle, it’s a Miracle
