Plans complete, but new bikeway is stalled

Plans for a new bikeway in Warwick are progressing, but don’t expect the witches’ hats to go up or the work crews to arrive any time soon.

The Queensland Government has announced that two rounds of community consultation have been completed, one in September 2021 and a second in November last year, and that planning is now complete ahead of a June 2023 deadline.

The proposed bike path will involve the creation of bicycle riding facilities at two intersections on the network by the Department of Transport – one at the intersection of Wood and Dragon Streets and the other at the intersection of Wallace and Pratten Streets.

That will make it possible for the council to create bicycle riding facilities for a single connected route along Dragon, Pratten and Easey Streets.

The collaboration is a plan to encourage people to ride more often, more safely.

This planning stage has cost $270,000, totally funded by the Queensland Government.

But planning is as far as the project has gone. The Department of Transport has advised that there is no funding for construction.
