Community road safety warrior David Kemp has been honoured for his tireless efforts to improve road safety on Southern Downs Roads.
The man known simply to many as “Kempy” has been acknowleged for his efforts by the Southern Downs Regional Council through its Volunteer Recognition Program.
In nominating him for the accolade, Councillor Cynthia McDonald applauded Kempy’s unwavering commitment to do right by the community.
“Kempy is well-known for his dedication and commitment to follow through on the issues that best serve the community,” Councillor McDonald said.
“I first met Kempy during one of our region’s worst droughts. He worked tirelessly to assist the community at every opportunity and he was involved in fundraising and distributing food and water to those in need.
“As the President and Vice-Chairman of the Warwick and District Road Safety Advisory Committee, Kempy also flies the flag for improving road safety on the Southern Downs.
“He is one of Warwick’s leading road safety advocates and his passion has driven institutional changes that have led to safer roads.
“Perhaps one of his most significant achievements was the successful lobbying for critical improvements to the Eight Mile intersection which resulted in the Federal Government funding upgrades to the tune of $30m.
“In the time I have known him, he has continually demonstrated to me that he is one of the most community minded members I know and I’m proud of the constant effort he makes to assist our community.”
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the Volunteer Recognition Program provided the opportunity for Council to acknowledge members of the community who go above and beyond the call of duty to achieve great things.
“Southern Downs is home to an army of individuals who make a true difference at a grass roots level to our community and our region’s liveability through their tireless contributions,” Mayor Pennisi said. “These individuals are the engine room of our communities and it is their countless hours of service in our sporting clubs, environmental groups and arts, culture and civic services that make Southern Downs a great place to live, work, play and stay.”
