Hooray for Today

Who are all these people? If you look closely you should be able to see our very own Lisa Crouch (fourth from left) and manager Samantha Wantling (front row, second from right) in the middle of the happy group of Today representatives who were in Brisbane for the Queensland Country Press Association’s annual awards.

We don’t know if you know this already – you do now! – but there are quite a number of ‘Today’ newspapers that work hard in our own respective regions within Queensland to keep bringing our local communities the news, the sport and the interesting stories of our areas and our people.

So it was exciting to get recognition, with the Today family cleaning up at the awards, winning best newspaper in both free and paid award categories.

Your local Today team didn’t miss out, either.

In the Best Single Story by an Individual Journalist, Leonie Fuge won third place for her Stanthorpe Today story on Claire McKenzie, who chose Stanthorpe Today to interview her for the story of her terrible ordeal when she lost both her legs. The QCPA described the coup (a city newspaper and a TV channel were also trying to get the story) as ‘a superb tribute to a local newspaper that was so trusted by the subject of the story that she was moved to tell her traumatic story to it alone’ and described Leonie’s writing as ‘intensely readable’.

In the Best Sports Picture section, another third place came our way with Melissa Coleman’s picture titled ‘Hang on’ with a little congratulatory message on timing, lighting and composition of her sports photo.

And in Best Special Publication, Warwick Today’s Leyburn Sprints publication received a special mention.

Star News Group’s managing director Paul Thomas paid tribute to the incredible work, passion and commitment across the group.
