Southern Downs Regional Council has successfully obtained over $18,000 in funding from the Department of Environment and Science to develop long-term roost management plans for the region’s protected flying fox populations.

The council aims to ensure the conservation of three species of flying foxes native to the area, namely the little red flying fox, black flying fox and grey-headed flying fox.

In collaboration with the Southern Downs Industry Education Association, the council will undertake weed control and planting initiatives along West Road next to Quart Pot Creek in Stanthorpe starting in March 2024.

This project aims to establish an alternative roost site for the flying fox colonies.

Scott Riley, Director of Planning and Environmental Services at the council, emphasised that while considering and managing the protection of flying foxes is essential, it is equally important to address concerns such as noise, odours, and potential crop damage.

“Flying foxes play a vital role in the local ecosystem, and balancing their requirements with the needs and expectations of the community requires a responsible and considered approach,” Mr Riley said.

“We need to sensitively manage the impacts of flying fox roosts on residents while allowing the animals to continue delivering their critical pollination and seed dispersal roles.

The chosen habitat on West Road was deemed suitable due to its proximity to water sources and significant stands of canopy species that flying foxes use for roosting.

Additionally, the site is located away from residential areas, minimising disturbances to the community.

The funded initiatives will enhance the existing vegetation to ensure the long-term suitability of the roost site. It will also guarantee the presence of emerging species to replace older ones as they reach the end of their life cycle.

A copy of the complete plan is available on the council’s website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/living-here/animal-management/roadside-grazing-and-travelling-stock/flying-foxes-bats-micro-bats.

With this funding and the implementation of sustainable roost management plans, Southern Downs Regional Council is actively working towards protecting and preserving the vital role played by flying foxes in the local environment.
