The Northern Australia Day Awards ceremony commenced on Friday, 26 January, marking a day of celebration and recognition for outstanding contributions within the Southern Downs community.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said Southern Downs Regional Council celebrates Australia Day each year with awards to recognise the achievements of our community members and organisation.

“This year we’ve been lucky to receive nominations for community members who continue to go above and beyond to make the Southern Downs a great place to live, work, play and stay on,” he said.

The event began with the prestigious Cultural/Community Event of the Year award presented to CelticFest Warwick. Designed to celebrate and showcase the rich tapestry of Celtic heritage, the festival offers authentic and contemporary experiences, contributing significantly to the social and economic fabric of both the local community and Queensland at large.

Acknowledging individual excellence, Clint Kenny received the Cultural/Community Person of the Year award for his pivotal role in establishing the Darling Downs Heavy Horse Festival. Kenny’s dedication to preserving equestrian traditions and fostering community engagement has been instrumental in the festival’s success since its inaugural event in March 2023.

Emmett Schnitzerling was honoured as Junior Sportsperson of the Year for his exemplary contributions to the soccer community, embodying sportsmanship and mentorship while scoring an impressive 172 goals in approximately 60 games.

Joining the ranks of honourees, William Morris was recognised with the Junior Citizen of the Year award for his outstanding achievements in academia and athletics. Morris’s participation in prestigious programs like the Inspire Youth STEM Camp and his representation in the South Queensland Indigenous Community Basketball League reflect his dedication to personal growth and community leadership.

The pinnacle of the ceremony came with the announcement of the Citizen of the Year, awarded to Jo Rathmell for her unwavering support and dedication to Southern Downs residents. Rathmell’s tireless efforts in assisting individuals facing homelessness, domestic violence, and other challenges exemplify her commitment to community service and compassion.

The Southern Downs Citizen of the Year award, representing the highest honour for exceptional community contributions, underscores the breadth and depth of Rathmell’s impact across the entire region, transcending geographical boundaries and uniting communities from all corners of the Southern Downs.

As the ceremony concluded, Mayor Pennisi extended heartfelt congratulations to all recipients, emphasising the profound impact of their collective efforts in fostering a culture of inclusivity, resilience, and support within the Southern Downs community.
