Woolworths, in collaboration with Landcare Australia, has announced a generous initiative offering grants exceeding $1 million to schools and early learning centres. This initiative aims to encourage more Aussie kids to engage in outdoor learning projects, particularly in Southern Downs.

The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants initiative is designed to support projects focusing on sustainable food production, waste management improvement, and the enhancement of native habitats. Encouragingly, schools across Southern Downs are urged to seize the opportunity and apply for the latest round of grants.

Last year, the Rainforest School in Queensland exemplified the impact of these grants by utilising the funding to orchestrate waterway and beach clean-ups, demonstrating a tangible commitment to caring for the local coastline.

Woolworths Group Manager Kerry Tofis, said the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program is all about supporting fun and engaging learning experiences that can help younger generations connect with natural environments.

“Our store team across Southern Downs have been proud to connect with local schools who have previously been awarded a grant. It’s been great to hear how the funding has helped enhance local school communities and support students as they get outdoors and learn more about the local environment,” she said.

Since its inception in 2018, the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program has allocated over $5 million in grants to nearly 5,000 primary schools and early learning centres nationwide.

This substantial investment has facilitated hands-on engagement with nature for more than 400,000 students, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental conservation within their communities.

Queensland, particularly, has benefited significantly from the program, with over 916 schools and early learning centres receiving grants.

Dr Shane Norrish, CEO of Landcare Australia, said being outdoors in the natural environment has positive benefits for the mental health and wellbeing of children.

“The partnership between Woolworths and Landcare Australia has enabled hundreds of educators an opportunity to provide meaningful environmental education programs,” he said.

“These programs offer experiences that are helping children learn how they can care for the land and be the next generation of Landcare leaders.”

Applications for the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program are now open until March 19, 2024. Interested primary schools and early learning centres are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $1,000 by visiting juniorlandcare.org.au.
