Retiring councillors were honoured at the final statutory meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council 2020-24 term.

Mayor Vic Pennisi presented Cr Jo McNally (and Cr Marco Gliori in absentia) with a plaque in recognition of their commitment and dedication to local government and for the role they had played representing their community. Both had made the decision not to stand for re-election; McNally because she was moving into a new career as a teacher and Gliori due to health issues.

Cr Sheryl Windle gave her own personal thanks to both.

She said Cr McNally had been a strong female role model; someone to look up to and who had inspired other women in the region to be more ambitious.

She complimented McNally on her expertise and knowledge as a councillor, particularly for her skills in governance.

She also spoke about Cr Gliori’s high values and the way he always conducted himself with dignity.

“The respect you have shown Cr McNally, Cr McDonald and myself has been greatly appreciated,” she said.

“I have the utmost respect for your opinions and the way you have stood up for what you believed in.”

She said both councillors had been great representatives for the entire region and she knew they would continue to give their time to the community, even though they would be taking on different roles.
