Martin reaches summit semi finals

Steve Martin has held on to beat Rob Capelli 25-23 in the quarter final of the Summit men’s singles.

The game was play on Saturday with work commitments over the next few weeks meaning the players had to bring it forward by a week.

Frank Taylor mowed and rolled the green especially for this game. Steve Martin and Rob Capelli arranged to play the game on Saturday morning.

Capelli started strongly and led nine-nil after four ends. Martin fought back and was down eight-10 after nine ends. The scores were close until after the 15th end. Martin scored eight shots on the next three ends to lead 21 shots to 15. Capelli played some good recovery shots to get back into the game and be down 21 shots to 22 after 22 ends.

The final four ends of the game were tense with some great shots and near misses keeping interest in the game. After a very close measure Martin managed to win 25-23 after an exciting game.

Next weekend three other quarter finals will be played. Games will start at 9am. The draw is as follows – Mark Spiller v Tyler Sweeney Marker Peter Ayerst – Jamie Zamprogno v Michael Sweeney – Marker Rob Capelli – Frank Taylor v Graeme Warner – Marker Matthew Murphy. The semi-final will follow these games. Nominations are still open for the men’s pairs and will close on Saturday 20 April. It would be ideal if there are enough entries to play the event in sections as it creates a fairer event and is used by Bowls Queensland and Bowls Australia.
