Stanthorpe’s Anzac Day main service is set to host a distinguished guest speaker, Commander Wolfgang Miko, a man whose life journey epitomises the spirit of service and sacrifice.

Born in Schacht-Audorf, Germany on April 29, 1965, Commander Miko’s path led him from his homeland to the shores of Australia. In December 1978, alongside his family, he immigrated to Australia, eventually graduating from Gladstone State High School in Queensland. His commitment to service ignited when he joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1984.

Commander Miko’s naval career is marked by a series of significant milestones.

Specialising as a Logistics Officer, he served on various postings and operational deployments, including a notable mission to Somalia aboard HMAS JERVIS BAY and a deployment to Bougainville in Papua New Guinea in support of the Australian-led Truce Monitoring Group.

His leadership shone during critical moments, such as the East Timor crisis, where he played a pivotal role in coordinating troop movements and logistical support. Graduating from the Australian Command and Staff College with a Masters of Management further fortified his capabilities, preparing him for operational postings like the Royal Australian Navy Liaison Officer in Bahrain during the Iraq war.

Transitioning to the Royal Australian Navy Reserve in February 2004, Commander Miko continued his service in the Australian Public Service, contributing significantly to projects like the sale of the Australian Government’s final shareholding of Telstra (T3) and the development of service conditions for members of the Australian Defence Force.

In October 2011, Commander Miko returned to full-time service, where he served in various capacities, including as a member of the Directing Staff at the Australian Command and Staff College and as Sustainment Manager at the Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Systems Program Office.

Beyond his professional achievements, Commander Miko cherishes his family life, sharing his journey with his wife Christine, their son John, daughter Samantha, and four grandchildren. He finds solace in simple pleasures like walking, cooking, and nurturing his wine collection.

Commander Miko’s dedication to duty, leadership, and service to both nation and community make him an inspiring choice as the guest speaker for Stanthorpe’s Anzac Day event. His presence promises to enrich the day’s commemorations, honouring the sacrifices of those who have served and reflecting on the enduring spirit of Anzac.
