Forfeit doesn’t dampen cultural flavour

From Rugby Union to food preparation.

The Warwick Water Rat’s Rugby Union club’s Cultural Round didn’t go to plan with their planned opposition, South Burnett Thrashers forfeiting, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a lot of fun at Risdon Oval.

“Unfortunately, the other team had to forfeit due to insufficient player numbers so there was no game,” Water Rat’s president Tess Cullen said.

“The boys just held a training session and still went ahead with the lovo and other cultural foods.

“I managed to source some fresh taro through Warwick Fruit Market, fresh taro leaves came from Cairns and cassava came from Brisbane to give the Fijian boys a taste from home along with some local meat (goat, pork and chicken).

“Our player coach, Dean, made Cook Islander ika mata (raw fish salad).

“The Fijian boys taught us how to prepare a lovo and all the food that was cooked inside it.

“It was still a pretty awesome day! Instead of playing rugby, we watched the Fijian Drua take on Moana Pasifika in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.”

The team return to the Rugby field this weekend to take on Dalby and District Rugby Union Football Club at Gatton.
