A Q&A with Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton

Warwick Today and Stanthorpe Today are delving a little deeper into the mind of the new Southern Downs councillors. This week it’s time to get to know new mayor Melissa Hamilton.

What’s something people may not know about you?

I’ve seen 25 different types of birds of paradise when working in Papua New Guinea. While it usually involved hiking through steep wet mountains it was well worth it to see the males dancing and displaying.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like catching up with friends for a chat, listening to music and reading.

What is your favourite part of your involvement in the community?

Meeting people. I’m very sociable, and quite enjoy a yarn.

What is a message you would like to tell your younger self?

Keep playing, laughing and having fun, don’t get too serious!

Who is an inspiration to you?

Queen Elizabeth II. She had a lifelong devotion to serving the public with grace, dignity and kindness.

Which six guests, dead or alive, would be invited to your ultimate dinner party?

Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Muhammad Ali and Elvis.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

We may hold different points of view, but we have much more in common than there is dividing us.

What are you most passionate about?

Transparency. Across all levels of government in Australia I think there is a rising expectation that our politicians and officials need to be more transparent in their dealings, and behave with integrity.

What is your biggest achievement?

Obviously being elected Mayor of Southern Downs. It is such an honour to be chosen to represent our community.
