Over 100 volunteers gathered at the Stanthorpe RSL on 22 May to celebrate their hard work and dedication in keeping the region vibrant and welcoming.
The Southern Downs Regional Council hosted morning teas in both Stanthorpe and Warwick to express gratitude to the numerous volunteers who contribute to the community.
Mark Pearce, CEO of Volunteering Australia, emphasised the importance of this year’s National Volunteer Week theme, ’Something for Everyone,’ which highlights the variety of opportunities available for individuals to participate and contribute towards positive change despite challenges.
“There is a diverse array of opportunities for people in Australia to volunteer within their community alongside something they’re already passionate about,” Mr Pearce said.
“Getting involved in volunteering can be as simple as sharing your expertise and interests, helping out in your local community, or drawing on your lived experience to support others.
“There really is a volunteer role for everyone.”
The event provided a platform for volunteers from various backgrounds to enjoy a morning tea, interact with like-minded individuals, and share their experiences.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton expressed heartfelt thanks to the region’s volunteers for their invaluable contribution to making the Southern Downs a warm and welcoming place.
“That the Southern Downs is known as a welcoming and friendly community is testament to our volunteers and community groups, who make us proud of our region,” Cr Hamilton said.
“We encourage everyone to try one of the volunteer opportunities across the region. Whether you’re drawn to environmental causes, community welfare, education, sport or beyond, there’s a place where your efforts will be rewarded.”
The event proved the crucial role that volunteers play in fostering a strong, supportive community and encouraged more residents to get involved in various volunteer opportunities.
