The Southern Downs Steam Railway Association (SDSR) is calling on locals to volunteer as carriage attendants for their ‘Downs Explorer’ heritage rail experience.

This unique opportunity is open to individuals of all ages who are interested in contributing to their community while enjoying the charm and history of heritage rail travel.

Carriage attendants play a crucial role in ensuring passengers have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable journey. Responsibilities include seating passengers, delivering safety talks, pointing out attractions along the route, and providing general guidance and support. Volunteers are typically needed on Saturdays and occasionally over weekends for extended tours. These tours travel to various destinations, including Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi, Clifton, Toowoomba, Chinchilla, Miles, and even Roma.

Volunteers are provided with ‘Downs Explorer’ vests, shirts, and caps. In addition, all meals, snacks, and accommodations (if necessary) are covered during tours.

The SDSR prides itself on fostering a vibrant and inclusive community of volunteers, both men and women of all ages, who give back to the regional community while having a lot of fun along the way.

The role is entirely voluntary and offers flexible commitment. A month before scheduled heritage rail tours, a call-out is made to all carriage attendants. Those available and willing can respond, get rostered, and simply show up on the day ready to go. This flexible arrangement ensures that volunteering does not become an overwhelming commitment.

Beyond carriage attendant duties, the Southern Downs Steam Railway offers a variety of volunteer roles during the week, particularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The Warwick Railway Precinct operates like a small city, bustling with activity and offering something for everyone, regardless of background or interests. Volunteering with the SDSR is an excellent way to stay active, utilize your skills, and give back to society.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway Association Inc. operates the ‘Downs Explorer’ and is one of the largest tourist attractions in the Southern Downs. This heritage rail experience offers passengers a unique journey through history, travelling across the scenic Southern and Western Darling Downs. The SDSR is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich railway heritage of the region, offering educational and entertaining experiences for all ages.

The SDSR is in great need of volunteers and invites you to join their community. If you are interested in becoming a carriage attendant or exploring other volunteer opportunities, please contact the SDSR for more details. Email info@sdsr.com.au or call 07 4661 9788.

Embrace the chance to be part of a vibrant community, contribute to preserving local heritage, and create unforgettable experiences for passengers. Your involvement makes a difference!
