Thousands of seedlings have been planted in the Southern Downs as part of a green project that aims to add one million more trees to the planet.

MacIntyre Wind Farm developer, ACCIONA Energía, has donated more than 3400 trees to local communities in the Southern Downs and further afield to Millmerran and Toowoomba to help support biodiversity and create wildlife habitats as part of its global initiative to work towards a greener future for all.

Anna-Selina Young, the Community Engagement Co-ordinator for the MacIntyre Wind Farm, said the tree donations supported community efforts to reforest regional land.

“Over the next few years we will monitor the growth of the donated trees and we look forward to growing our relationships with local environmental groups and individuals to see our green spaces flourish,” she said.

ACCIONA’s senior environmental advisor Scott Black provided the advice on the seedling types that would work in the areas.

“For our work to be truly impactful, it’s important we take note of what flora and fauna already reside in these areas,” he said.

“We carefully selected the trees and seedlings for each community location.”

He said it was wonderful to see communities that were passionate about their environment and working to build green spaces that would thrive for years to come.

Recipients of trees and seedlings since February include the Anglican Parish of Warwick, the Condamine Headwaters of Land Care Group nursery, Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board and Killarney Bushcare.

The ACCIONA team will visit some of the planted-out locations in late September as part of a five-year monitoring plan for the project.
