In celebration of Aged Care Employee Day this year, Southern Cross Care Qld (SCCQ) reflects on the profound impact of its staff at their Allora Homestead and Allora Nursing Home, who have been the heart and soul of their cherished Allora community for decades.

Majella Baker, Residential Manager at SCC Allora Homestead, is a shining example of the dedication and compassion it takes to make a real difference to the lives of residents. Having served at Allora Homestead for almost 40 years, Majella has enjoyed a long tenure which not only reflects a commitment to her role, but a deep-seated connection to the residents and their families in her beloved community.

“There has been a kaleidoscope of change, challenges, and triumphs over the years,” Majella shared. “There’s been heartbreak, joy, but most of all, it has been so rewarding to serve this community. In many ways, we’ve walked side by side with our residents and their families until they reach the end of this life’s road. It’s truly very special and a privilege.”

Allora Homestead, nestled in the heart of the Southern Downs community, has been a sanctuary for those aging-in-place, fostering a sense of connection and belonging that is deeply valued by its residents. Majella emphasises the importance of that role in the Allora community saying, “I see that continuing here into the future with Southern Cross Care Qld because of what they believe in and stand up for.”

The history of Allora Homestead is interwoven with SCCQ’s own legacy. Since 2003, when SCCQ took over the management of Allora Homestead, the organisation has been committed to upholding the values of community and care. This year, Allora Homestead celebrates its 41st anniversary under SCCQ’s stewardship.

SCCQ CEO Jason Eldering highlights the significance of this, “Allora Homestead is a testament to the strength and collective achievement of the community. It’s quite an amazing legacy to be dedicated to serving your community for over 40 years”.

With 13 aged care homes across Queensland, including eight in rural and remote areas, SCCQ continues to support individuals in places where they feel known and loved. On this Aged Care Employee Day, Allora Homestead stands as a beacon of compassionate care, honouring the staff who make such an incredible difference every day.
