A Warwick Women’s golf contingent has starred at the annual Toowoomba City Golf course Open day.
The Warwick team once again shone bringing home nine encouraging points to add to their Open Day Pennant Total.
Melanie McLennan was the Division one gross runner up, while Roslyn Darton won Division three best gross, and Yvonne Pinington the Division three, best stableford. Di Johnston, Jill Barnes, Jo McAntee and Margaret Adcock all received a ball in the rundown. The next open day is Warwick’s own, which this year will be held on Thursday 5 September 5.
Wednesday, 7 August the Warwick Women played a Single Stableford, with Wendy going the extra mile, and coming in with 40 fabulous points. While Judy Lester was the runner up with 35. The pro pin was won by Majella, with an impressive gobble, leaving no doubt who was closest to the hole. This was shared by Judy, Lyn McKillop, and Jill Barnes.
Saturday saw the Warwick Open Weekend begin. The Cherry Tree coffee and Dining Single Stableford was hotly contested, with Melanie keeping her fine form up bringing in 41 awesome points.
That round included an eagle, two birdies, and seven pars. Jill Barnes was the next clever golfer, with 36 points, proving her handicap was perfect for the day. Ann Tomkins had 35, Pauling who was visiting from Pittsworth joined a swag of other ladies, Jo McAntee, Di Evans, Roslyn Darton, and Yvonne Pinington, who all had 34 points. Donna Keogh won the pro pin for the day, and shared it with Jo, Di J, and Sam Hinze.
Sunday, 11 August was a rare opportunity for our ladies to play on a Sunday. Congratulations to Judy Lester, Margaret Adcock, and Mary Young, who all scooped the pool with scores of 69 nett. Judy surfacing as the eventual winner after countbacks had been applied. Very unfortunate for Margaret and Mary, as any other day, that score would certainly be a winner.
Warwick Sporters
There were 71 starters in the Stableford game this week and it was a very congested leader board with five players on 36 points.
Greg Carey took top spot on a countback and Dan Bowles the second spot thus relegating Evan Pfeffer, Keith Farrell and Peter Farrell to a ball each in the run down. The only other run down score was 35 points and Terry Bennett, Jet Jensen, Mike Hoskins, Doug Wilson and Brian Thomas all collected a ball each .
The Pro Pin 13th winners were Jesse Ollerton, Mark Paroz and Mike Hoskin.
Nearest the pins 5th Grant Ollerton 7th Mick Banks, 9th Jesse Ollerton, 11th Mal Galloway, 16th Geoff Lee.
Stanthorpe Golf
Nikki Waterworth and Lynette Ludlow have taken out the ladies foursomes in the Bendigo Bank Bonus played on Sunday at the Stanthorpe Course.
The A Grade men’s foursomes winners were Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien.
Water said it was a battle both against the elements and the far flung places of the golf course.). The men’s B Grade winners came from nowhere in that they had never played a game of golf together before and so a ‘B Grade Bond was Born’ in Brendan McMillan and Keith Jones. Well done.
Finally, the overall net winners of the day were Todd Beckett and Michael Thompson. Michael joined the other winners in expressing his gratitude for the sponsorship and good work of the Bendigo Bank.
The Stanthorpe Golf Club are honoured to announce that Harry ‘Houdini’ Day has come to town. Harry joined the club only a week ago and in the Saturday competition pulled off some ‘great escapes’ to the amazement of the hapless onlookers. Harry is a BIG driver of the ball. Most drives were good, but some not so good and then the Houdini in Harry came to the surface and performed a ‘great escape’ against impossible odds.
Harry Houdini claimed the honours of the day with a very tight win over Brendon Barker on a count back. But the hot competition didn’t end there, third and fourth places also came down to the wire on a count back with Keith Barnett getting the edged on a very personable and keen competitor, Ron Batterham. The days golf was sponsored by the Brass Monkey Brewery. The club is very grateful to the Brass Monkey Brewery for the generous vouchers given for the winner and runner up. All readers of this article and golfers are encouraged to visit the Brass Monkey Brewery. The Writer of this article can vouch for the pure nectar of the Brewery and in particular the ‘Quart Pot Old.’
Pin Shots went to Keith Barnett, Scott Constable, Brendan Barker, Harry Houdini Day and Barry Jones.
Congratulations to the Ladies, the winners for the day were Lynette Ludlow with Helen Jones runner up. And thanks again to the Brass Monkey Brewery and I’m sure their ‘better halves’ will be making a ‘B (beer) line’ to the brewery sometime soon. Nikki Waterworth, our ‘sharp shooter’ from last week, proved the point and cleaned up on the Pin Shots this week.
Next Saturday the 17 August will be sponsored by Marie Cook and the local concrete pumping enterprise, GLT Concreting (Nathan Stibbard).
