Investigations have been launched into a horrific head-on car crash which left one man trapped for almost an hour near Cunningham’s Gap on Sunday morning.

Police said initial investigations indicated a landcruiser had been travelling east on the Cunningham Highway at Tregony when it collided with a camry heading in the opposite direction just before 5am on 18 August.

The driver of the camry, a 43-year-old Ipswich man, was reportedly trapped for almost an hour before Toowoomba Lifeflight crews and paramedics arrived.

The man was treated for serious leg injuries on the scene by paramedics and LifeFlight’s critical care doctor, before later being airlifted in a stable condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Another man, a 28-year-old Logan resident who was driving the landcruiser, was taken to Warwick Hospital with minor injuries.

The incident forced the closure of the highway for several hours, prompting lengthy delays while emergency services responded.

Police said investigations were ongoing.
