LifeFlight’s First Minutes Matter (FMM) workshops are heading to Stanthorpe, to teach the community lifesaving skills that can help in an emergency.

FMM is a free safety education program offered online and in-person by LifeFlight’s highly skilled medical training experts.

In this course, attendees will learn about safety at an accident scene, how to treat burns and bleeding, snakebites, choking, strokes, seizures and CPR.

Retiree Robert Barrett said the free workshop was a great opportunity to brush up on his skills.

“I feel confident that I could help in an emergency situation, and I encourage other people to attend First Minutes Matter as the skills you learn may help to save a life one day,” Mr Barrett said.

Toowoomba-based First Minutes Matter Regional Medical Educator Leah Harrison has over 20 years of experience as an emergency department nurse and clinical educator.

Ms Harrison understands the importance for people to know what they can do in a medical emergency before help arrives.

“It is important for all people to know skills that can save a life in the minutes when people are waiting for specialist care to arrive,” she said.

“No one should have to face the situation where they are the first family member or bystander in an incident, and not know how to help.

“These skills will save lives and improve patient outcomes.”

The workshop will be held on Thursday 5 September at Community Development Services (The Granite Belt Neighbourhood Centre), 8 Corundum St, Stanthorpe, from 9.30am to 3pm.

An online version of the course is available for those unable to attend in person.
