The Southern Downs community has rallied together in an incredible show of support for Cody Iverson, a local boy who was recently involved in a serious accident and has been hospitalised since June.

On 17 August, a fundraising event at the Tannymorel Bowls Club drew a crowd of over 400 people, all eager to lend a hand to Cody and his family during this challenging time.

The event, which started as a modest idea among a group of selfless locals in the first weeks following Cody’s accident, quickly grew into something far beyond what anyone had anticipated.

“While the family was dealing with shock and unexpected outcomes, these amazing people were working on making our lives easier in any way they could,“ said Cody’s aunt, Stacey Gabriel.

The initial plan for a small bowls day to raise funds rapidly evolved as more people stepped up to offer their help and donations.

The event featured a variety of activities, including pig races hosted by Kev, which proved to be a highlight for many attendees. “

“If you’ve never been to the pig races, you have to take the time to get to Sandy Creek and see them!“ Stacey said.

The community’s generosity was on full display, with over 60 auction items donated, raising more than $40,000. A multi-draw raffle saw over 5000 tickets sold, and the bowling green was packed with 60 players, while more than 175 meals were served throughout the day.

“We cannot say enough about how proud we are to be a part of the Southern Downs community,” Stacey said

While she refrained from naming individuals, out of respect for their humble contributions, she emphasised the immense appreciation felt for everyone who donated signs, prizes, food, their voices, time, effort, and money.

“This will never be forgotten,“ she said.

Cody’s journey to recovery is ongoing, and the funds raised will play a crucial role in supporting his healing process.

“Cody continues to go from strength to strength, but he has a very long road to recovery, and every dollar will help,“ Stacy said.
