Leadership role for Laura

Allora’s Laura Geitz, right, has just been announced vice captain of the Queensland Firebirds in readiness for their 2011 ANZ Championship campaign opener against the NSW Swifts on Monday.

Geitz is extremely honoured to receive her first leadership role with the Firebirds in her fourth season with the Queensland team. She will work with captain Lauren Nourse.

Geitz said the Firebirds have worked really hard in training but will need to be on their game if they are going to secure a win on Monday.

The NSW Swifts have already kicked off their 2011 season with a dominant win over reigning premiers the Adelaide Thunderbirds 60-40 last weekend. The Thunderbirds had lost a number of key players in the off-season.

“The Swifts are an extremely hard team to come up against in our first game,” Geitz said.

Particularly, with the return of Mo’onia Gerrard to NSW, who joined an already strong defensive line-up of Rebecca Bulley and Sonia Mkoloma.

The Firebirds have targeted consistency over the whole four quarters as their potential game breaker.

“We’ve worked hard on having a high intensity for 60 minutes and if we can do that we can be a title contender,” Geitz said.

“My focus is on winning a premiership with the Firebirds and putting out a good performance on court.”

Then hopefully, she said, this will lead to selection in the Australian Netball Diamonds team that will compete at the World Netball Championships in Singapore in July.
