In front of a good crowd and under lights at Sullivan Oval, the Stanthorpe Gremlins played some entertaining football last Friday night to post a 40-nil win over premiers the Texas Terriers.
The final scoreline gives no real indication of the nature of the game which was played in two entirely different halves. In the first half, both sides had opportunities but in the face of solid defence could not break the line as play see-sawed from one end of the field to the other. Moments before the half-time siren Stanthorpe scored and converted to take a 6-nil lead to the break but the game looked to be there for either side.
Early in the second half the Gremlins made their intentions clear with some flamboyant touches yielding a flurry of tries and the complexion of the game changed. Nathan Shatte looks to be relishing his positional change to the centres and, with every touch, looked dangerous. Texas had no answers to the attacking onslaught and as the second half progressed the superior fitness of the Stanthorpe players began to tell. The win puts the Gremlins and Killarney jointly at the top of the Border League ladder.
