The Stanthorpe Gremlins tore the Killarney Cutters’ defence to shreds at Charlie Andrews Oval last Saturday night. An under strength Cutters had no answers to the Gremlins attack.
Allan Wetzler led the way with a dazzling performance as the Gremlins stamped their authority on the competition with a 50-4 win. Aaron Abraham was the leading try scorer with a treble. Fullback Abraham was outstanding under the high ball throughout the game. Captain Nathan Shatte took full advantage of every opportunity that came his way, adding another two tries to his season’s tally.
Mick Savio got the Gremlins off to a flyer with a try in the opening minutes of the game. Aaron Abraham, Andrew Thorne and Dale Perkins built on that start with tries in the first half to give the Gremlins a solid 20-4 lead at the break after Anthony Bryant, Cutters’ captain coach, scored shortly before half-time.
The Gremlins opened the second half as they did the first, with Aaron Abraham claiming his second try soon after kick off. Tries to Nathan Shatte (a double) and Jason Wilmot followed. Abraham rounded off the game with the final try of the match. Stanthorpe kicker Jason Wilmot was successful with seven kicks from nine attempts.
One of the highlights of the game came in the second half when Wilmot kicked a forty/twenty and from the following play Nathan Shatte showcased all of his experience to score his second try.
Stanthorpe this weekend face a real litmus test when they take on the Inglewood Roosters at Sullivan Oval. It will be a big day with some great junior football played prior to the senior games.
