Back for May visit

By Casey O'Connor

A contingent of golfers from Kilcoy joined members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club for Saturday’s 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Jeff Ihle and Biz Ihle, of Kilcoy and was the start of a busy weekend on the Stanthorpe Golf course.

For the Kilcoy golfers the May long weekend marks a much-anticipated annual trip to the Granite Belt that has been on their agenda for many years. The Stanthorpe community was delighted to wake to overcast skies and the sound of rain on the roof on Saturday perhaps not so much the golfers. The drizzle cleared shortly after play commenced and the big group enjoyed good conditions for the round.

The visiting team of J. Poulton and J. Runge and the local pairing of Kay Webb and Max Hunter were forced into a count back when they both returned what would normally be a winning score of 50 for the round. After the count back it was the visitors who got the nod. The local duo forced to settle for the runner’s up spot after some excellent play.

Jeff and Biz Ihle have sponsored the Saturday round on the May long weekend for many years and the club appreciates their ongoing support and the support of the visiting Kilcoy players.

The Stanthorpe Golf Club welcomed new a sponsor Black Toyota, Warwick and their representative Rob Reeves for Sunday’s programme. A maximum field had those in the starter’s box on their toes as they efficiently despatched teams to their allocated teeing points to commence the three ball Ambrose event.

Winners, by the narrowest of margins were the local team of Wes Smith, Hayden Smith and Michael Pearson (Bugsy). Just one-sixth of a stroke separated them from runners up, Guy, Bryce and Jack from Kilcoy. Second runners up were another group of Kilcoy visitor, JR, Dunga and Jack.

Flying the flag for the locals in the Ladies Only event was Neta Thouard, Lorraine Gurnett and Lorraine Evans who returned a winning score of nett 70. The successful trio finished three shots clear of their nearest rivals (another local group) Helen Jones, Kay Webb and Annelle Batterham.

It wrapped up another great May long weekend of golf in Stanthorpe. It is a weekend of competition that members and visitors look forward to each year. The organisers extend their thanks to the sponsors and those members who gave up their time to help, both inside and outside the clubhouse during the busy two days.

This weekend play reverts to normal Saturday competition. The May monthly medal and putting competition is scheduled and will be sponsored by Mark and Racheal Hendry. There is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse for this event. Saturday will also be the first round of both the men’s and ladies’ championships.

Members are reminded that the winter tee off time of 11.00am is now in play.
