Golden days for athletes

By Casey O'Connor

It certainly been a big couple of weeks watching all those medals flowing Australia’s way, We could almost put a dent in the budget deficit if we melted down the Gold.

It has been amazing viewing. Just so many highlights. Our local heroes are just that and did our region proud.

The Women’s T20 team manage to continue their winning ways. It may not have been pretty, but they showed they can get down in the trenches and fight and it made those late night/early mornings exciting and worthwhile.

Oliver Hoare is a name that is sure to come up in Sports Trivia questions after his unbelievable win in the 1500 metre event. Australia’s first since the great Herb Elliott.

How good is that.

The riders in the cycling who picked themselves and the splinters up off the deck and continued to compete over coming days – that was brave.

And then the rider who became a missile and finished in the crowd. That was terrifying. We were all numb with shock but pleased no one was seriously injured – It was a situation that could have ended so badly.

The Diamonds avenged their previous defeats, but their former captain Laura Geitz was spot on when she told me to “look out for Jamacia”.

Obviously, she still has her finger on the pulse.

But what of the Kookaburra’s the men’s hockey team – they certainly had the last laugh with a sensational win over India in the Gold medal game. It came after a blip on the radar saw them have a couple of goals scored against them in the semi-final game – that is almost heresy.

Theirs is the most amazing of all records – seven straight gold medals. If that does not make young kids want to play Hockey, then I don’t know what would.

It almost all too much to digest but we have until Victoria 2026 to recuperate. It might take me that long to get the caffeine out of my system.

Now – are we going to have an NRL Grand final to look forward to at Suncorp. That is a situation will be giving plenty of people sleepless nights that have nothing to do with black coffee
