BUSY SCHEDULE FOR STANTHORPE MALLET PLAYERS

The Stanthorpe Mallet players have also been enjoying the improved conditions and three disciplines were played this past week.

The Association players had first use of the court playing on Tuesday (23/8). Heather Widderick played a solo hand against Sharyn Roser. Roser took a narrow lead early and held it throughout the game to score an 18-10 win. During the game Widderick and Roser each had a peel and a run of two hoops in a row.

Jenny Tunbridge again showed her showed that she is not only a skilful player but also a master of tactics when she played Joy Newman and Pauline Smith. Tunbridge’s game included one peel, one double and three runs of two which all helped her to a comfortable 26-13 win.

The Golf Croquet crew took over the court on Wednesday.

Liz Ellway and Di Wren played Shirley Evans and Bev Sullivan and all players were in good form.

In the opening game Wren managed scored 11 hoops (including a hole-in-

One) and Ellway added three hoops to the total. Evans was also in good touch scoring seven and her partner three, but Wren’s score ensured she and Ellway had a comfortable 14-10 win.

Wren continued her outstanding from in the next game with another total of 11 hoops which included two difficult jump shots. There was little wrong with Ellway’s game, and she added seven hoops to the total. In a close game Sullivan scored 14. Final score 18-14.

The Gateball players must have read the weather report on Friday and ventured out in better numbers. Les Williams, Jenny Tunbridge and Heather Widderick played the white balls in games one and two. Pauline Smith, Sharyn Roser and Joy Newman played red balls.

Players from both teams got the day off to an excellent start. The opening game could have gone either way but in the closing minutes the white team scored an Agari which gave them a 10-8 win.

After winning the opening game, the White team took control of hoops two and three early in game two. Accurate play by Tunbridge and Williams, kept the White team I the lead. Two Agaris helped White to a 16-9 win.

The teams remained unchanged for the remaining games however they changed balls.

Game three was close. Roser managed a gate and touch on hoop touch but lost her advantage when she put her ball out of play.

At the end of the game scores were locked at nine all. The Red team got the nod after a countback.

In the final game the White team (Smith Roser and Newman) held a narrow lead early in the game. At the back end of the game with only minutes remaining the Red team put whites off the court. Barbara Reid and Joyce McKeen enjoyed one of their best weeks, filling first place in both events this past week.

On Monday they played together, but the Draw Pairs found them with different partners, Barbara played with Noela Collins and Joyce with Pat Kelly.

Only one hand can be published, so it must be the 3NT played by Barbara on Board seven (above).

All pairs who played in 3NT by South received a club lead. To keep control of the play, declarer must hold back the Ace of clubs for at least one round. Once on lead, declarer can start on the spades. First the Ace is played, followed by a small spade to the Jack, which wins, and then the King, which clears East/West of spades.

The continuation of the eight of spades allows a small diamond to be discarded from hand. Declarer now returns to hand via a top heart and runs the hearts. The distribution is much the same as in spades, so the fourth heart in dummy is a winner. Declarer has now won the required nine tricks for a score of 600 and West can have the consolation prize of the remaining tricks. Barbara succeeded while the other pairs in 3NT failed by one trick for a score of minus 100.

The Draw Pairs was enjoyed and deserves to be played more than once a year.
