Axis tips in strange weekend

Aaron Finch.

This past week has been like no other – the passing of Queen Elizabeth I think tipped the world’s axis a little off kilter.

While we all processed the many layers of meaning that the historic moment will have for us all, life moves on as it should.

We are just two weeks away from the NRL Grand final and if the axis of our world simply was altered a little, there were a few footballers and referees who tried very hard to turn the world upside down at the weekend.

The Sharks-Cowboys game was enthralling, but Sunday’s game was next level. I have watched many games of football but never anything like the Roosters-Bunnies game.

To me the game reinforced my belief that the games does not need the Bunker, it needs some strong officials with the whistle and sideline officials prepared to use their flags for something more than fly swats or to signal a success conversion (and then they can even get that wrong).

It was all good theatre at the end of the day, and I must say I was pleased the Bunnies got the win, however, I do fear that a repeat of that type of game may well lead to serious injury.

Let’s hope common sense prevails; referees do no lose control and neither do captains and coaches.

It’s not just the NRL.

Unlike the Sharks who grabbed defeat out of the jaws of success, (according to our sporting sub editor), the Brisbane Lions are knocking on the door of an AFL GF appearance after snatching a win from the jaws of defeat and giving it a very good thrashing.

What happens this weekend in both codes – is mouth-watering.

Another moment in time was the announcement by Aaron Finch that his time as captain of the Australian ODI team had run its course, retiring at the end of the series against New Zealand which was played of course in Cairns.

Finch leaves the one day side after a series win and in a good place. His successor however, is not clearly defined.

Finch has not really anointed anyone.

He does however believe Dave Warner has served his time and a leadership position should not be beyond his reach.

Steve Smith has indicated he is not keen. Will we see a left field appointment?

Meanwhile Finch will be in the driving seat for the upcoming ODI World Cup hoping to add a win to what is an outstanding record.

While the natural order of sport will find its own level, I doubt that there is anyone who does not beleive that last week we lost the most remarkable woman modern history. Perhaps Elizabeth R was the true GOAT – Greatest of All Time. (meant in the most respectful way).

May She Rest In Peace
