Helen masters Tasmanian Pickleball

Helen O'Brien (L) brought home a gold medal in Pickleball from the Tasmanian Masters competition.

Southern Downs and Granite Belt Pickleball player Helen O’Brien has brought home gold from the apple isle.

Pickeball was part of the Tasmanian Masters multi-sport Tournament held on the beautiful NW coast late last month.

The Pickleball was held in Burnie on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 October.

Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor racket/paddle sport where two players (singles), or four players (doubles), hit a perforated hollow polymer ball over a 36-inch-high (0.91 m) net using solid-faced paddles.

Opponents on either side of the net, hit the ball back and forth until one side commits a rule infraction.

Pickleball was invented in 1965 as a children’s backyard game on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA and named after the family’s Dog.

It has now reached around the world and is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia.
