sports notes.

Conditions were testing on the green at the Summit Bowls Club for the Turley Triples event last week but it did little to deter the Bowlers.

HOT AND WINDY CONDITIONS

Mid-week bowlers at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club faced hot and windy conditions on the green last Wednesday (18/1) however three games o Social bowls were played.

Greg Hammond and Brian Brown defeated Polly Lay and David Rose in a thrilling game that went down to the wire. Hammond winning 14-11.

In another close game Noela Trollip, Basil Trollip and Peter Smith scored a 24-21 win over Helen Jones, Dot Rankin and Jack Bell.

In the final game Len Girgenti, Colin Denning and Wendy Hurnall proved too strong for L. Girgenti, John Graham and Bruno Stefanon. The final score a comfortable 17 shots to 11.

46 bowlers gathered ready to hit the green last Thursday night for the popular “Twilight Bowls.” We are all desperate for rain however it could have chosen a better time to fall. Due to the heavy downpour the event had to be cancelled.

Due to Australia Day celebrations, there will be no “Twilight Bowls” tonight (Thursday 26/1). However, a great night of entertainment is planned when “Twilight Bowls” resumes on Thursday the 2nd February with some “Live Music” being supplied by the talented local muso, Dave Stuart, a very talented local musician who will be playing a great mix of old favourites during the evening.

There will be a “Sausage Sizzle” (around 5pm) prior to the game.

A great night is assured so come along and join in the fun.

A reminder that novice bowlers as well as experienced bowlers are most welcome to play “Twilight Bowls”.

Call the Club on (07) 468 11 276 between 5.30and 6pm on the day to register your name/s or be at the Club by 6pm to you can be slotted into a team.

Bowls can be provided if required and the bar will be operating.

For information further information on Bowling or Social and full Membership please call Len 0477 500 402 or Jack 0400 412 631.

In warm windy conditions on last Saturday two social games of Triples and one Club Championship game were played.

Noela Trollip, Basil Trollip and Peter Smith outplayed Polly Lay, Robyn Smith and Dot Rankin to win their game 22 shots to 15. Caroline Draper, David Draper and Len Girgenti proved too strong for Colin Denning, Helen Jones and Greg Hammond winning by a 12 point margin. The score 22 – 10.

The long awaited 2022 Veteran’s final was also played on Saturday. It was the battle of the brothers-in-law as Bruno Stefanon and Len head to head.

The game resulted in a victory for Len Girgenti who managed to get the radar working quite well from the first bowl he played. I understand he also now has bragging rights at family functions.

Thanks to Greg Hammond who marked the game.

The club would like to acknowledge and thanks sponsors Steve and Faye Short of 4Water Supplies. The Club thanks them for their ongoing support.

Roser wrestled the lead back after some accurate roqueting and peels, also scoring two runs of two hoops in a row as well as two peels and one double. Roser managing to keep the opposition team’s balls apart.

Newman and Tunbridge were not done with and regained the lead only to have Roser over take them again.

Just as Roser looked the winner, Newman’s last shot gave she and her partner a one point advantage to seal the win.

On Wednesday (18/1) the Golf Croquet took over the court.

In game one Kim Steele, Di Wren and Liz Ellway played Shirley Page and Bev Sullivan. This was a very close game. The teams finished the game at 12 all. A play off followed and Page and Sullivan managed to secure a one shot advantage. The final score 13-12 in their favour.

Les Williams and Pauline Smith played Sharon Roser, Joy Newman and Jenny Tunbridge. The opening game was a close match with Williams and Smith going down by just one point. The final score 11-10

One of the plays of the game came from Les Williams who managed an excellent long bomb shot taking an opposition ball out of play from a spark.

Game Two went the way of Roser, Newman and Tunbridge. Their team scored three Agaris in their 17 -11 win. Williams and Smith managed only one Agari in the game.

The team of Roser, Newman and Tunbridge continued their winning form into game three scoring a comfortable 15 – 7 win. The winning team scored on Agari as their opponents Williams and Smith struggled to find form.
