Sports Notes

It is rare that for a husband and wife to win individual golf competitions on the same day, on the same course but that is what happened at the Warwick Golf Club last Wednesday. Janine and Ian Stewart are pictured following their unique daily double.

STEWART FAMILY DOUBLE

In a rare turn of events the winners of this past Wednesday’s golf events at the Warwick Golf club were Janine Stewart and husband Ian.

Rarely do you see a husband and wife win individual competitions on the same day on the same course but that is exactly what happened.

ON an extremely hot day, Janine was the winner of the Ladies Single Stableford. Husband Ian won the Sporters event.

Definitely cause for celebration in the Stewart household on Wednesday evening.

The Ladies Single Stableford was played on the red course last Wednesday (8/2) and Janine was certainly the golfer of the day finishing her round with a winning score of 36 points in Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining sponsored day.

The Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining are great supporters of Women’s Golf and their sponsorship is greatly appreciated.

Runner up Anne Lyons, whose good form and podium finishes continue. Anne carded 35 points but was had to survive a countback when Sharron Cooper returned the same score.

Following them were Lynette McKillop (34), Narelle Norris (C/B), Jill Barnes (C/B), Melanie McLennan (C/B) and Judy Lester (33); Liz Cockram (C/B), Mary Young (C/B) and Vicki Bennett (30) ; Yvonne Pinington (C/B), Tub Ingall (C/B) and Roslyn Darton (29), Maria Carey, (C/B) and Carole Brandon (28), Margaret Adcock (C/B) and Wendy Rhea 27: Annice Payne 26; Helen Olsen (C/B) and Michelle Wright (25); Dianne Evans (24); Anna Cox (22)

The leader among the nine hole players was Lynn Lane with 20points. She was followed by Patti Hemmings (17); Jan Aspinall (14) and Lois Wilson (13).

The Jackpot pin was shared between Helen Olsen, Sharron Cooper, Melanie McLennan, and Narelle Norris.

Vicki Bennett had the best front nine scoring an excellent 21 points.

STEWART SIZZLES ON SATURDAY

Only the keenest golfers took to the course to play the Rose City Premium Meats Single Stableford.

Conditions were treacherous but it looks as though hot conditions are no problem for Janine Stewart who backed up her mid-week win with another sizzling performance.

She scored an impressive 38 points to take home the bacon. Not only did she survive the heat but also a countback after Narelle Norris also returning 38 points. Given the conditions they were great scores. Although the heat kept some regulars off the course the remaining scores were: – Helen Olsen (36); Gwen Mills and Dianne Evans (35), Anne Lyons (34), Margaret Adcock and Sam Hinze (33), Judy Lester 32 and Di Johnston (32), Tub Ingall (31), Annice Payne (30), Yvonne Pinington, Roslyn Darton and Joely Singleton (28); Wendy Rhea (26); Mary Young and Lyn McKillop (23), Carole Brandon (20).

Margaret Adcock, Samantha Hinze, Narelle Norris, and Di Johnston shred in the spoils at the Jack, the seventh.

Jill Barnes had the best front nine scoring 20 points.

Great to see Joely Singleton back playing.

Next Saturday (18/2) the Warwick Ladies will be playing a Single Stableford, sponsored by One Table Café, Located at The Regency Park complex.

On the following Wednesday (22/2) play will be in the February Monthly Medal, proudly sponsored by Club Warwick RSL

A date for your golfing diaries ladies is Saturday (25/2). It is the 2023 Secretary’s Pen which is sponsored by Lyn McKillop, the Ladies hardworking Secretary.

WELCOME BACK KAY

Conditions on the Stanthorpe Golf course on Saturday were not for the feint hearted with unusually high temperatures scorching the Granite Belt.

The extreme conditions had little effect on the scoring in the Stroke (not heat stroke) event sponsored by Matt and Nikki Waterworth.

It was a pleasure to see Kay Webb one of the stalwarts of the Stanthorpe Golf Club back on the course after a lengthy layoff from injury, due to injury. Although Kay was not among the Ladies winners, she did claim the Ladies pin at three.

Christine Hood is certainly enjoying her golf at the moment and returned another winning score on Saturday when she carded nett 65. Helen Jones has also been in good form and was the runner up with a score of nett 68.

Filomena Silver won the Ladies Pin shot at 12 and Lisa Stuart at 17.

In the men’s event three players featured in a countback to determine the winner. The winning score was 68 nett and the countback favoured Brendan McMillan. Runner up was Hamish Adam and Matt Burgess forced to settle for the run down.

Scott Constable claimed the men’s pin shot at three, Matt Waterworth at 12 and Max Hunter at 17.

Pro pins went the way of Tod Beckett (1/10), Scott Constable (5/14) and Matt Burgess (9/18). Once again, the Birdies nest at 14 was unclaimed.

Those with run down scores of nett 71 and better for the men and nett 82 for the ladies received a voucher.

There was Special award for Richard Reardon who returned an uncharacteristically high score on the day. We won’t divulge the figure, but he had plenty of friends. Mark Baker and Aaron Simmers both returned that same score. Must have been the heat factor.

The Glen Aplin School Golf Day, is just around the corner. This is always a popular date on the golfing calendar and this year will be held on Saturday 25 February. It is an open event with all players, welcome. An official handicap is not required simply nominate to play at either the Glen, Aplin School or the Golf Club.

This Saturday (11/2) HelloWorld, Stanthorpe, sponsor a single Stableford. There is a Time sheet for this event on the board.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE – A WEEK AND A CART

Last week ‘s Warwick Sporters was walker’s only due to the heavy rain the previous night (and not many were crazy enough to tackle the course).

What a difference a week and a cart make. Conditions were still quite hot, but 61 golfers line up to greet the starter in the Pro Shop sponsored nett event on Wednesday (15/2).

Ian Stewart was not going to be outdone by wife Janine who was on course playing in the ladies competition. He returned an excellent score of nett 65 to take the bikkies in the men’s round while his wife made it a Stewart double with a win in the Ladies.

Finishing just behind the winner was runner up Brian Davidson who just missed out. His score 66 nett.

Brian may be sharpening up his game for the upcoming start of the “Owls” new season.

Featuring in this week’s Sporters run down were David Gengos, Brett Sturgess and Duke Maloney all on 67. Danny Lyons (still recovering from last week’s stroll around the course) all on his own with 68. Herb Bownds, Ian Skillen and Bob Lester (70); Tim Plemming and Garry Hanson (71) and Greg Wallace rounding things out with 72 on a countback.

Nearest the pins: – Dan Bowles (5th), Doug Rickert (7th), Jesse Ollerton (9th), “Door Monitor” Maloney (11th ) Pete Farrell (16th).

All Sporters should have Wednesday 22nd February is the final day in their golfing diary. It is the final day to qualify for the Sporters shoot-out. Importantly, it is also the Sporters AGM. There will be nibbles and drinks after the meeting so make sure your social calendar is free to attend this very important meeting.

Note: For the uninitiated of whom I am one, the Owls are essentially a group of

“Third age” golfers who are in reality just “old ****s” who play once a fortnight or so. (Sounds like I’d fit right in.)

The group play every second game at Warwick and other places including Stanthorpe, Tenterfield, Boonah, Clifton and the occasional weekend trip away.

MAUGERI BRIDESMAID NO MORE

We tipped last week that Angelo Maugeri was knocking on the door of a win at Sporters and low and behold last Sunday he delivered. After several weeks of being the bridesmaid, Angelo Maugeri on Sunday morning with the back nine in play he returned nett 21 to take top prize.

His improved performance came after some serious practise on the putting green and on Sunday he holed some good putts.

Stuart Rayner is another who has been there abouts in the last few weeks. He is slowly getting his game into good shape and his nett 23 on Sunday was good enough for runner up.

Dick Hilton (nett 27) finished a few shots back and figured in the run down.

This week there was a change to the winner of the gross event. This week Matt Waterworth took the honours with a one over par score of 37.

Our usual winner of pin shots, Terry Byrnes, is asking why some people doubt his prowess. This week Mark Lynam took the honours at the 12th hole and asked if Terry could better it and he almost did.

There were no takers for the other pin shots at 17, it was too far away.

Sporters will be on the course again next Sunday. It is an 8am tee off – hopefully beating the heat. There is an open invitation for anyone to join the fun on a Sunday morning.

NEILSEN AND DARTON SCORCH FIELD

The men at the Warwick Golf Club played a Single Stableford competition last Saturday and although conditions were quite hot a big field of 66 did the necessary slip, slop, slap headed out taking care to stay well hydrated.

A countback was needed to determine the winner after Adam Neilsen and Peter Darton scorched the field returning 42 points. Neilsen got the nod following the countback. (Great result for Peter after some time away from the game). There were plenty of countbacks required in the remainder of the results. Eddie Kemp finished in third place a lip ahead of Jamie Ollerton both scoring 39 along with Herb Bounds.

Other scores included Greg Chandler visiting from Bundaberg Golf Club (c/b) and Chase Longey (37); Duke Maloney (c/b); Michael Payne and Mark Paroz and Michael Hoskin (36) and Paul Dautzenberg(c/b35).

Morgan Gilchrist (104cm); Eamon Cockram (220cm) and Ed King (290cm) shared the Pro Pin spoils at 13. The NTP at the fifth belonged to Michael Hoskins. Daniel Bowles was on song at the seventh as was Evan Pfeffer at the ninth. Rounding out the NTP’s were John Brandon (11) and Wayne Wells (16).

With forecast temperatures of 35-39deg on Sunday the Warwick Golf course was closed from 1pm – 5pm. The course reopened at 5pm for those wanting to play a twilight round from 5pm – 7pm.

As a result, the Opening Day / Lane Cup qualifying round set down for last Sunday has been postponed to a date yet to be announced.

STUART IN SCINTILLATING FORM

The Stanthorpe ladies recently played the midweek medal comepitition. Lisa Stuart and Mei Bell dominated the event.

Lisa’s excellent golfing skills were on display, and it was almost a clean sweep. Stuart was in scintillating form and won the best nett (72) and Best Gross (87) competitions. She also won the putting comepitition and held the pin shots at the third and 17th.

There was little else left for the remainder of the field. Mei Bell was the runner up. Her nett score 77 and gross 108. She also picked up the only other pin shots and that was at the 12th and 5/14th. A great round Lisa.

WELL PLAYED TEAM WARWICK

Earlier this week the Millmerran Golf Club hosted the District Executive Challenge as part of the Women’s Golf Downs and South-Western District Challenge.

15 clubs from across the district participated in the Challenge.

Congratulation to the Team Warwick, Roslyn Darton, Marg Adcock and Lyn McKillop who were runner’s up in the competition. The team finished on 91 points. Marg scored 34 points, Roslyn 30 points and Lyn 27 points. They fell just three points shy of the winners Team Cabarlah.
