TWILIGHT BOWLS SIGNS OFF

The Stanthorpe Bowls Club wrapped up a very successful season of Twilight Bowls on Thursday night.

The inclement weather may have forced the cancellation of Social Bowls on Wednesday, but the 34 bowlers enjoyed great green conditions and were entertained by Todd and Dave who played some great live music during the course of the night.

On the green Robyn Smith’s team proved too strong for Dot Rankin and her team and scored a 19-10 win.

In the first of two games where the bowlers went head to head with the golfers the bowlers team led by Brian Brown scored a 12-10 win over the Keith Jones and his golfers. Luisa Girgenti and her crew scored a convincing win over Nikki Waterworth’s team while Max Hunter’s team defeated David Drapers team by three shots in the final game. Twilight Bowls now go into recess until Spring when the weather warms up, so watch this space later in the year for details.

The Bowls club thanks everyone who supported the popular concept this season. A big thank you to the Bowls club members supporters and the Golf Club President Len Leigh and his members who have assisted in running the evenings over the past five months.

The Club’s 2023 self-selected Pairs competition was played on Saturday in ideal conditions. Polly Lay and Bruno Stefanon met Robyn Rose and David Rose in the opening game and honours went to team Rose. The score 19-12.

STANTHORPE MALLET PLAYERS ON COURT

Players from the Stanthorpe Mallet club were again busy last week with competition in the varying Croquet disciplines played on different days.

The Association players were the first to hit the court on Tuesday.

Joy Newman and Heather Widderick played Pauline Smith and Jenny Tunbridge. Smith and Tunbridge began well on the first hoop and a good game ensued. After their good start Smith and Tunbridge got away to a four hoop lead.

Newman scored two peels and Widderick one peel as they fought to claw back the margin. Tunbridge returned serve scoring a peel and two hoops in a row. Her partner Smith added a peel and two lots of two hoops in a row on the four and five back hoops which extended their lead allowing them to score a 26-14 win.

No surprise that there was no Golf Croquet given the volume of rain in Stanthorpe on Wednesday.

The weather cleared and the court surface was in good conditions for the regular Gateball games on Friday.

In all four games, Sharyn Roser and Pauline Smith played Jenny Tunbridge and Joy Newman.

Scores were close throughout the opening game and resulted in a 10-all draw. Tunbridge and Newman got all their balls through gate two, however after a countback the win went the way of Smith and Roser who had scored two balls through gate three.

The second game was also close. Newman catching Smith and Roser in the final moments of the game to even the score at 10 all with one Agari. With the last shot of the game, Roser scored gate three to give Roser and Smith a one point advantage. The final score 11-10.

Following the break Smith and Roser appeared to go off the boil they struggled to get a live ball on the court as Newman and Tunbridge took an early lead in the third game. A flurry of scoring in the final minutes of the game was not sufficient for the pair to catch their opponents and Newman and Tunbridge, scored a 15-9 win.

In the final game Smith and Roser regained their composure and lead from the get-go. They were able to maintain control throughout the game however Newman and Tunbridge frustrated them taking control of gate three.

There were a number of errors from all players which saw their own balls taken out of court through. Smith and Roser went on to score a 9-5 win.
