SILVER AND BELL WIN SPECIAL ROUND

The Stanthorpe Ladies played a special round of golf last week.

NEVER A CAMERA

There is never a camera handy when you need one. One Stanthorpe golfer who is often seen at the course during the week practising would be someone you would naturally assume knew the Stanthorpe course well. Especially the difference between solid ground and water.

The player spotted a lone ball lying in a waterhole on what he thought was solid ground and decided to go and retrieve it. He quickly discovered what lay beneath the grass was not solid soil but in fact plenty of water.

After sinking almost to his chest, he reassessed the situation. To continue may have required a snorkel and decided no ball was worth the grief and that it had not been a good idea after all.

Of course as is often the case in these situations there was no camera on hand – what a pity. Golf pic of the year gone begging.

Undaunted by the situation, the player continued playing completing Saturday’s round albeit a little soggy. He did however disappear very quickly from the clubhouse after the game. It is rumoured the player may have had a little more success at Sporters both with identifying water and solid ground and with his game.

SPORTERS WIN FOR ROSER

Stanthorpe Sporters played the front nine on sun day and although conditions were ideal it seems a number of regulars chose a lie in rather than checking out the lay of the greens.

Terry Roser managed to clean up his act and dry out his equipment following his Saturday folly and played well enough to win Sunday’s competition. His nett 25 was best of the day. He also collected the only pin shot of the day when his tee shot at the par three third landed close to the pin. His luck ran out and his putt narrowly missed the edge of the hole. He went on to hole the next putt from close range.

Two shots back was runner up, Gary Kirby (nett 27). It should not be long before he makes an appearance in the winner’s circle.

Ivan Juriss claimed the run down prize with nett 31. After a gross round of 40, Paul Armstrong added another prizes for the lowest gross score to his tally.

Sporters tee off each Sunday at 8am. There is an open invitation to everyone to come and join the fun. This Sunday the back nine is in play.

STANTHORPE MALLET COURT ACTION

Catching up on the action at the Stanthorpe Mallet club. On Tuesday (11/4) a small group played Association Croquet.

Jenny Tunbridge played Sharyn Roser. Tunbridge scored a run of two hoops in succession, and then three hoops in a row giving her an early advantage. Roser scored an Irish peel where both balls go through the hoop with one stroke and one other peel scored from a croquet shot. Despite this Roser was unable to bridge the gap and Tunbridge won the game 26-18.

In a second game Joy Newman and Pauline Smith played Heather Widderick. Widderick looked to be in good touch and scored two hoops in a row twice. Newman too was playing well. She scored one peel and two hoops in a row twice. Her partner Smith also scored two hoops in a row. Again this was not enough. Newman and Smith were stymied by Widderick’s play and she scored a 22-17 win.

The Golf Croquet crew hit the court on Wednesday (12/4). Three games were played. Kathy Hopgood played Kim Steele and Shirley Page. Page and Steele scored a total of seven hoops. Page scoring five of those. The pair were unable to match Hopgood’s form and she went on to win the game 13-4.

In the second game Hopgood and Page went head to head. Hopgood notched up her second win with an 11-5 score.

In the third and final game Hopgood and Page combined to played Steele. Hopgood continued her good form scoring six of the pair’s eight hoops and made it three wins for the day as she and her partner won the game 8-4.

The week wrapped up with the normal Gateball games on Friday (14/4).

In the first of the four games, Jenny Tunbridge and Pauline Smith played Joy Newman and Les Williams. The game finished in an eight all draw and in the ensuing shootout Tunbridge and Smith won got the win.

The teams remained unchanged for all four games and in the second game accurate ricocheting (hitting another ball with your own) saw Newman and Williams control the entire game and scored an 11-9 win.

The pair maintained that for in the third game. After scoring an Agari they wrapped up the game 12-8.

Newman and Williams continued to dominate in the final game scoring two Agari’s as they took a 15-8 win. Giving them a 3-1 winning advantage and bragging rights on the day.

GOOD CONDITIONS; GOOD SCORES; GOOD NUMBERS

There was an excellent turn out for the Southern Downs Rifle club’s shoot on Risdon Range last Sunday. No doubt the pleasant conditions contributed to not only the number of participants but also some very good scores.

John Cook continued his good for in the Standard Class and scored another win. He narrowly defeated runner up Greg Wilson by three ‘x’ points after the pair finished on equal scores.

The open class as is often the case was another close contest with several shooters in the running for top spot however once again honours went the way of Richard McKillop.

The Sporter / Hunter class was popular on Sunday. Steve Lee and Hayden Aspinall both scored maximum points. Lee was eventually declared the winner by “V” bulls. Only three three short of a perfect score (105.21).

It was great to see young shooters Jack Hildred and Sierra Reck competing along with their fathers Grant and Clint, we hope they continue to enjoy the sport as they progress through the ranks.

PENNANTS – MIXED BAG

The Warwick Golf Club Pennant Teams had some mixed results last weekend but still show some promising signs. All three teams played away.

The Handicap Team continued their success with a strong 3/2 win over Allora at Allora. The Open team travelled to Dalby and scored a draw against Dalby.

The Senior team went down 3/2 to Cabarlah at their home course. Cabarlah. Congratulations to all the players who are taking the time to travel away and represent the Warwick Golf Club.

SLASHERS WIN FOR BOWNDS

The Langham Slashers were back on deck on Sunday.

The large group played the back nine and it was Bert Bownds who claimed the Warwick RSL voucher with a score of nett 22. Bownds was in good form and also claimed the NTP at the 16th.

After a countback Greg McMahon was declared the runner up ahead of Doug Macbeth when both returned nett 27.

The Best Gross was the domain of Laurie King (41). A few putts that went awry may have cost him a score in the thirties.

Peter Seidel’s putter was on fire, and he claimed the least putts (12). Chris Hall had a not too shabby drive at the 14th to win the comepitition for the longest drive. He also claimed the NTO on the 13th and Brodie Quirk the 11th.

Graham Olsen and Gordon Barker had a real tussle for the Bradman Ball. Ultimately Olsen claimed the dubious prize with nett 45. Des Porter won the Ollie Ball (most putts 23).

Peter Seidel carried the good for with his putter into the putting comepitition at the conclusion of play and won the coffee warmer.
