The winners got out to a 12-3 lead in the early stages of the game and although they led all the way were tested in the final stages. On the 12th end they held a comfortable 15-6 lead, but their opponents fought back to be within four shots at the 18th end. Welsh and Wright played a good front runner’s game and held on to win by three shots. The final score 19-16 to claim the 2023 title. Well played both teams.

While the final unfolded there were also two games of Social Bowls in progress. Pamela Kerr, Gary Cooper and Jim Rickard scored a 2413 win over Nat Kumseewad, Ken Hayes and Max Holder. Ray Southee, Richard Tartan and Bryan Wright defeated Peter Guy, John Ruhle and Russell Bean 19-17.

SUMMIT CLIMATE CHANGE STYMIES FINAL

The semi-finals of the Summit Bowls club ‘A’ and ‘B’ Mixed Pairs competition continued last Saturday. Rod Newlands and Adrian Jackson scored a convincing 27-7 win over Rod Crome and Tony Schubert. The winning pair were always in control of the game and despite their best efforts not much worked for Crome and Schubert.

The second semi saw Keith Mungall and Michael Sweeney score a one shot win over Margaret Harvey and Jamie Zamprogno. Harvey and Zamprogno had the upper hand for most of the game however on the final end their opponents scored four shots. Jamie failed to save the game with his last bowl and Keith and Michael came home with a wet sail to snatch a surprise 20-19 win.

Rod Newlands and Adrián Jackson were set to play Keith Mungall and Michael Sweeney in the final on Sunday morning however The Summit ‘Climate Change Factor’ came into play.

Conditions on Saturday were perfect but a heavy frost on Sunday morning combined with the strong wind conditions decided to ruin the day.

It took only a few ends before common sense prevailed. Play was abandoned and the final has been rescheduled to Saturday, 10 June.

The club hosted a group of 40 Bowlers from the Sunshine Coast. The group joined members from the Summit and played four games of fours and three games of triples. It was a successful and enjoyable day and special thanks go to those who helped with the catering.

WEATHER PLAYS AN UNWANTED PART

Play for some members of the Warwick Croquet group was affected due to the heavy downpour. While the rain was welcome some games were abandoned, and some players were unable to play.

On Thursday (18/5) numbers were down a little for the weekly Golf Croquet games due to the earlier weather event.

COUNTBACK BEATS CROSS TEAM

A team of bowlers from the Southern Cross Bowls Club played in the Inglewood Open Fours Carnival last weekend. The group, Barry Ziebell, Clark Davidson, Kim Hankinson and Daryl Busch were beaten on a countback and had to settle for the runner’s up position. Bad luck and well played fellas.

On Sunday a Special General Meeting of the club was held. A decision was made to amend the club constitution to have only one committee. This amendment will now be refined and adopted at the AGM on 13th August.

Following the meeting, fresh from gaining experience at Inglewood, Chef Wayne “Lager” Foster excelled himself and produced the culinary delight of “Sizzle de Sausage avec Oignon”, which went down well on the local “Le Pain Blanc”. The best part we hear was that the chef even cleaned the BBQ plate afterwards.

This culinary delight was followed by a dessert of Social Bowls. Clark Davidson and Matty Shepherd must have had a wish to get out of the biting wind as they won their pairs game against Roger Cavanagh and Wayne Foster in record time. (Did anyone see a white flag waving anywhere?)

the winner of the Lucky number was Whispering Pete. The members draw went unclaimed as Gary Penn was not present and the Jackpot is now $70. Saturday 27 May – Club Mixed Fours for those members entered. Starts at 10am. Contact Clark 0427 673 277.

The final of the Club Mixed Fours will be played on Saturday 3 June. Play begins at 10am. Social Bowls will follow at 1pm. Simply be at the Club by 12.30pm and you will get a game. Everyone is welcome.

For barefoot bowls, social and competition bowls, functions and bar, it is hard to go past the Southern Cross Bowls Club Inc. located opposite St Mary’s Church in Warwick.
