LYONS AND DARTON MIDWEEK WINNERS

A large field of Ladies played in the May Mid-Week Monthly Medal event last week sponsored once again by the long-time sponsors the Warwick RSL.

The winner of the Division One comepitition was Anne Lyons with a score of nett 71. Roslyn Darton had a fantastic round of nett 70, which scored her a win in

Division Two. The runner’s up in their respective divisions were Di Johnston, (nett 72) and Sharron Cooper (75 nett).

Anne Lyons topped off a winning round by winning the putting comepitition with the least number in Division one – 28 putts. A countback was necessary to establish the putting winner in Division two after Roslyn Darton and Helen Olsen each finished their rounds with twenty-nine putts. Helen took the honours. She was another player who had a great round scoring gobbles on the sixth, 16th and 18th.

FROSTY START FOR STANTHORPE SPORTERS

Stanthorpe Sporters were greeted with a show of white on the fairways on Sunday morning. It was the best frost the group has encountered so far this year as they teed off for the regular nine-hole event.

The early gave way to a beautiful morning and as the frost quickly disappeared play go under way on the back nine.

Angelo Maugeri returned to the winner’s podium, after putting together a steady round to score nett 24 and picked up the winner’s prize.

Some good putts made a lot of difference to Maugeri’s score, especially at the par three 12th hole, where he putted in putting in from just off the green for a well-earned birdie.

Ivan Juriss and Wayne Hilton also returned 24 for the round but Maugeri prevailed in the cut of the cards.

Ivan Juriss and Wayne Hilton shared the lowest gross score of the day, 43 hits for the nine holes. On this occasion the cards fell in favour of Juriss and Hilton, who played alongside his father Dick picked up the rundown prize.

There were two par three holes on the back nine for pin shots, but only one was won. Stuart Rayner hit an extremely high lob onto the green at the 12th to claim the NTP at that hole.

With the official start of winter this week it might just be time to break out the winter woollies for Sporters this Sunday and the near future.

Tee in the nine-hole, event is 8am and there is a long-standing invitation for anyone to join the regular Sporters crew and enjoy the cool morning conditions.

TEAM LEADS THE WAY

On Friday the Ladies Pennant team played Pittsworth at the Toowoomba City Course. Not only did the Ladies look pretty smart in their uniforms but they played some great golf and brought home five and a half very valuable points. A great result and credit to the team as City is a very challenging course for all golfers.

The Warwick team now leads the competition with 18-points well ahead of Cabarlah (11 1/2 points) however the Warwick team have not yet had their bye so only time will tell if they can hold onto their lead.

The Warwick team next play Cabarlah at the Oakey Golf Course.

JONES AND BECKETT COMBINE FOR WIN

With the Club championship event done and dusted Stanthorpe golfers had a more relaxed round last Saturday. As it was the last Saturday of the month, the competition was a medley 4BBB Stableford. The event sponsored by Dave and Lisa Stuart.

The big frost on Saturday morning gave way to a mild and sunny day but there was a noticeable drop in temperature later in the afternoon. That prompted some players to suggest perhaps 11.30am might be a better start time in the winter months.

Barry Jones bounced back well after the championships, playing very well. Jones and playing partner Tod Beckett returned the winning score of 47 for the round.

The team of Brad Silver and Filomena Silver finished in second place with a score of 45 points. Filomena, has only recently come into competition golf and had some very good scores, adding 26 points to the team total.

The Men’s pin shots were won by Darryl Boekholt (three), Chris Binge (12) and Barry Jones (17).

There were no takers for the pin at the third. Lisa Stuart cleaned up at 12 and 17. Visiting golfer, Jamie Stuart held the pro-pin at 1/10, Barry Jones (again) held 5/14 and Brendan McMillan collected at 9/18.

Gary Kirby was quite pleased with his round, especially at the par five, 11th hole. Kirby had two good hits up the fairway and was on the green, very close to the pin.

He nailed the putt for the eagle and five points were added to the scorecard. If only it was that east all the time.

This week play will be in the June Monthly Medal and putting competition. With the opportunity to qualify for the Medal of Medallist round in November diminishing with each month, competition could be a little more intense this week.

The round will be sponsored by Andersens of Stanthorpe, courtesy of eagle man, Gary Kirby.

There is a Time sheet for the day on the board at the club and tee off will be from 11.30 am for the afternoon session.
