Toowoomba golfer snares open

Toowoomba golfer, Adele Roberts returned an excellent 69 nett to take out the Warwick Women’s Open Day at Warwick Golf Course this past week.

Warwick ladies Golf Club president Margaret Adcock the Open Day has a great reputation among golfers from across the region.

“The 85 women were treated to a great day of golf,” Adcock said.

“Players travelled from Laidley, Crows Nest, Glen Innes, Dalby, Oakey, Toowoomba, City, Pittsworth, Clifton, Gatton, Goombungee, Cabarlah and Wynnum to attend the event.

“A good covering of grass had the course playing tough and scores reflected that with only three players bettering 70 nett.

“The major trophy for the day was won by Toowoomba golfer, Adele Roberts who returned an excellent 69 nett, local members featured prominently in the trophy list.

“Courtney Walsh representing the Warwick Credit Union, one of the two major sponsors of the day, presented the Trophies at the end of play.”

Warwick’s Melanie McLennan has been in hot form recently, so it was no surprise to see her return a 69 nett. She was edged out of the winning position following a countback however she won the runner-up to the overall nett.

“Mel is only one good game away from returning to a handicap of single figures, a great achievement,” Adcock said.

“Wendy Rhea was another local player who scored returned an impressive score of 70 nett to win the best nett in Division four.

“Vonnie Pinington and Carole Brandon each had scores of 72 nett were runner’s up to the winners of Division three and four respectively.

“Courtney Walsh also presented the prizes sponsored by John Dee meats the other major sponsor of the Open to Sam Hinze and Liz Cockram for wins in the best gross category of Divisions One and Two.

“Janine Stewart completed the Warwick haul winning the Division Two best Stableford with a score of 36 pts.

“John Dee Meats as a major sponsor also provided graded trophies won by Warwick players Anna Cox and Di Evans in the Accurate Long Drive, Anna Cox and Wendy Rhea in the Graded Approach Shot and Mary Young, Anne Lyons and Mel McLennan in the All-in Approach Shot.”

Adcock said this year the club extended the Open Day to a two-day carnival to accommodate those visitors who have to travel significant distances. Wednesday’s event sponsored by Narelle Norris.

Local players who backed up for a second day of Stableford competition were joined by a group of golfers from Boonah and Glen Innes.

Warwick Golfer Mary Young returned a score of 36 points to win Division One. The runner up one of the visitors, Sonia (34 points).

Division Two was a battle between the winner Helen Olsen and runner up Carole Brandon. Both women played well to return scores of 40 points

Balls in the rundown went to Anna (Boonah), 36 CB, Trish Bell 33, Tina (Boonah) 33 CB, Di Macdonald 33, and Jill Barnes 32.

“Hopefully extending the Open will develop in coming years into a successful two-day event,” Adcock said.
