Double weekend keeps Victoria Hill on top

Competition leaders Victoria Hill held on to the lead in the Warwick Cricket Association’s Condamine Cup competition recording two wins in two days of T20 games at the weekend.

In the lead up to Australia Day Cricket Carnival all teams played two T20 games to complete both rounds 12 and 13 of the regular season competition and free up both grounds and players for this weekend’s carnival.

Victoria Hill and third placed Wheatvale both completed the winning double.

Hill defeated Sovereign Animals by 67 runs in their opening game on Saturday. Pat Bourne put on an unbeaten 53 to lead the team to 3/137 from their 20 overs and in reply Sovereign Animals were all out for 70 with Mitch Hay top scoring with 23 while Vic Hill bowler Nick Webber finished with 2/4 off four overs.

In the round 13 game on Sunday Vic Hill were too strong for Allora scoring 6/167 while restricting their opposition to 8/141. Tom Morris top-scored for Vic Hill with Will Gordon scoring 58 for Allora and Vic Hill’s Nick Webber securing the points for his team with an impressive 4/8 off four overs.

Allora had earlier fallen to Wheatvale in round 12, losing by 24 runs. Battling first Wheatvale were all out for 96 with Hayden Doherty top scoring with 54 not out from 42 balls while Paul Christensen picked up 2/22 off three overs for Allora.

Despite the loss, it was a good game for Christensen who also starred with the Paul slamming 77 off 37 balls including seven sixes and six fours as his team crashed around him to be all out for 96. Tom Doherty was Wheatvale’s best with the ball with 4/12 off four overs.

Wheatvale’s second win of the weekend came against Colts on Sunday. Colts set a total of 4/98 with Colts, 1/130 chasing the runs down with two balls to spare.

Meanwhile in the remaining round 12 game John Cleary smashed 105 not out off 45 balls including 14 sixes and one four to lead his team to 1/130 against Redbacks who only managed 9/126 with Steve Grogan top scoring with 64 while Al Costello was the best Colts bowler with 3/27.

Redbacks, who are still holding on to second-place on the ladder, bounced back on the Sunday beating Sovereign Animals with three balls to spare. Sovereign had set a total of 5/119 with Jo Wagner scoring 56 while Luke Costello snared 3/14 for Redbacks. In replay Tom Allison lead the charge for Redbacks scoring 54 in the team’s winning total of 6/120.
