THE SUMMIT BOWLS NOTES

One game of Championship singles was played on Saturday afternoon with Jamie Zamprogno defeating Michael Sweeney 28-5.

Zamprogno had one of those games and played well. Every time Sweeney had bowls in the head he managed to rest the bowls or trail the jack. Sweeney played good bowls and had several close misses.

Twenty-four bowlers turned up on Saturday afternoon to play for club trophies. This was a great turnout as four games of two bowl triples were played. It was pleasing to see that twenty-one ends were played as the weather was perfect. Results are as follows – Bill Hutchings, Eddie Zanatta and George Little 23 v Brian Webster, Graeme Warner and Tony Schubert 16 – Rod Crome, Rod Newlands and Larry Mullin 20 v Maree Ball, Phil Davis and Tony Schubert 16 – Margaret Harvey, Dave Cleary and Rob Capelli 19 v Marylee Wilson, Paul Zamprogno and Adrain Jackson 14 – Peter Balmer, Tina Schubert and Carl Sutherland 22 v Trevor Wilmot, Pam Moore and Ray Spiller 19. Winners of the afternoon were Bill, Edie and George.

On Sunday the Men’s District Sides played the Mibunn bowlers. In the first match the Mibunn bowlers defeated Southern Downs 74 shots to 69. Each side won two rinks. In the afternoon the Mibunn side won 79 shots to 72. The Southern Downs did better by winning 2.5 rinks to 1.5 rinks. All players enjoyed the experience and the games were played in a friendly but competitive spirit. The Southern Downs District appreciated the opportunity to play against the Mibunn players and the district looks forward to a rematch in the future.

Next Saturday the following games will be played in the singles 10.am – Mark Spiller v Tyler Sweeney Marker (Peter Ayerst) – 10am Graeme Warner v Frank Taylor Marker (Rob Capelli) 1pm Steve Martin Winner of Frank and Graeme. There will be a trophy afternoon at 1pm. Warwick East Bowls

The Warwick East Bowls Club monthly pairs will be held today 18 April, starting at 10am after being brought forward for this month.

There is also social bowls on Saturday 20th April beginning at 1 pm.

Congratulations to Johno Johnson and Lynn Collie on winning the club selected mixed pairs on Saturday in a closely fought final against Robbie Alcock and Jule’s Buse. There was also social bowls with veteran Gunter winning and Steve Fordrunner up.

Stanthorpe Bowls Club

On Tuesday 12 April twelve teams from the surrounding district took part in the monthly ‘Turkey Triples’ event.

Runners up for the day were Nat Cumseewad, Ray Southee and Craig Thurgate of the Warwick City Bowls Club with the composite team of Elena Scott, Frank Taylor and Dale Callaghan taking out first prize.

The next ‘Turkey Triples’ day will be held on Tuesday 14 May beginning at 10 am.

In pleasant autumn conditions on the Saturday, 13 April, the Club Self Selected Pairs competition was held. Twenty players participated in the event and the results of the preliminary games are as follows. Frank Gallo and Wendy Hurnall defeated Tammy and Tobias Robinson. Bruno Stefanon and Len Girgenti defeated Polly Lay and Mick Mills. In the 2nd round of the competition, Gary Trevena and Peter Smith defeated John and Sylean Fairley. David Draper and Gary Z. defeated Gabby and Amanda. Frank Gallo and Wendy Hurnall defeated Colin Denning and Greg Hammond and Bruno Stefanon and Len Girgenti defeated Jack Bell and David Rose.

In the semi-final played on Sunday 14 April, Frank Gallo and Wendy Hurnall proved too strong for the combination of David Draper and Greg Z. defeating them by 27 shots to 7 and in the second game Gary Trevena and Peter Smith had a five shot victory over Bruno Stefanon and Len Girgenti defeating them by 22 shots to 17.

The final of the Club Selected Pairs was also played on Sunday 14 April between the teams of Frank Gallo and Wendy Hurnall and Gary Trevena and Peter Smith. The lead changed several times during the match but Frank and Wendy finished the stronger, running out eventual winners by 18 shots to 14. Congratulations to Frank and Wendy and commiserations to Gary and Peter and thanks for a great contest played in the true spirit of the game.

The annual Open Fours Carnival will be held this coming Sunday 21 April, beginning at 9 am. The event is fully booked out with 14 teams from around the district nominating for the event. Thanks once again to the Stanthorpe R.S.L. Services Club for sponsoring the day. The club is always on the lookout for new members so if you are looking for something to do for a few hours on a Wednesday or a Saturday, why not give lawn bowls a try. Warwick Bowls

The Warwick Bowls Self Selected pairs final has been won by Ossie McPaul and Jim Rickard.

The duo beat Phil Wagner and Brian Black 16-15.

This was a very close and exciting match both for the players and the onlookers. During the match there was one point scored on 15 ends, two points on two ends and three points on four ends.

On the 20 end Rickard led 16-14, then Black scored one on the 21st.

Meanwhile in the Ladies A Grade Singles final Faye Flint beat Pamela Kerr 25-10, marker Pat Seibell.
