Warwick Water Rats Rugby Union team go into their Cultural Round at home in Warwick on Saturday on a high after scoring their first win of the season last week.

The Water Rats defeated the Condamine Cods 40-0 in their round two game according to president Tess Cullen.

“Our boys had an absolute cracker out in Condamine,” she said.

“It was our most dominant win in years.”

Tries scored by: Dean Cullen, Brad Johnson (2), Jolame Vai, Hamish Swift and

Jay Mitchell.

“There was standout performance from Jay Mitchell with some consistent play in the backline and a great 50+m try,” she said.

“And Jolame Vai showed strong ball running and great link play.

“Player of the match to Isikeli Nakoroilagilagi for some threatening runs through their defensive line and strong defence in the outer channels.”

This week the Water Rats take on South Burnett Thrashers at Home at Risdon Oval for their 2024 Cultural Round.

“Our Cultural Round against South Burnett Thrashers this weekend is to celebrate the global game that is rugby union and the various cultures that come together to make our team great,” she said.

“Proceeds from the round are going towards us helping support our Pacific Islander players to play rugby with us here in Warwick.

“These guys work very hard in quite physical roles to help fill employment gaps in regional areas and quite often are living very frugally to help support their children, families and sometimes villages back home.

“Rugby Union is a great bonding activity, particularly for our Fijian players who grew up playing the game.

“Many of the boys recognise people from home playing for other teams so it is a real privilege for us to help them play and create community bonds while they are away from their families.

“We are hosting a traditional Fijian BBQ (called a lovo) after the game for our players and the other team.

“Other players who are from or who have parents from another country are also contributing food from their cultures.

“So far we have confirmed Fijian, Cook Islander, South African, Indigenous Australian and German cuisine.”

Kick off is at 1:30pm on Saturday, 27 April.
