Warwick Wolves Senior Women’s team put their first win on the board against Willowburn at Queens Park in the Football Queensland Darling Downs women’s competition at the weekend in what was a big weekend for the club.

The women’s success, three-nil against the second Willowburn team, came as the club’s juniors returned to the field.

Sophie Simpson scored all three goals for the women’s team, the club’s first women’s side in several years. The win came after a tough start to the season for the team who faced the top four teams in their first four games.

Club president Dom Benz was full of praise for the team.

“They were the first of our senior teams this year to clinch a victory,” he said.

“It was so good to see. We had three weeks off and they trained right through and it showed.”

They will head to Chinchilla this weekend for their next game before getting a good run of home games.

The men ‘s A grade went down 5-1 to Willowburn with Liam Hackenberg scoring in the 40th minute with his team down 2-0.

Meanwhile the Under 23s went down 5-2 to Willowburn on Saturday night with midfielder Percy Manfield and striker Letti Badi Badi scoring the goals after being down five-nil at the 80-minute mark.

“Both teams played well as teams but we were just slightly down on numbers this week,” he said.

“But both teams are starting to gel and I think in the next few weeks we will start to see a bit of traction from both teams.”

This weekend the men’s teams take on Highfield at home.

“Juniors kicked off with a bang on Saturday,” he said.

“The sun was shining, the fields looked amazing. We have 420 children. We run our own internal competition. We’re very lucky, our kids don’t have to travel unless they chose to play representative football which is cool.

“They kicked off at 8.30am and finished at 12.30pm.”
