Micheal Sweeney’s team has taken out the Summit Bowls Club’s Men’s Fours title played at the club at the weekend.

Sweeney’s team which also included Kurt Empen, Cameron Wilson and David Stibbard defeated the team of Joe Straatman, Ray Spiller, Glenn Preston, and Rob Capelli 23-12 after two big days of bowls.

The competition, starting Saturday saw Peter Balmer, Alex Mattiazzi, Jamie Zamprogno and Carl Sutherland defeat Peter Ayerst, Rod Crome, Owen O’Brien and Adrian Jackson 17-10 in the morning while in the afternoon games the eventual winners beate Peter Balmer, Alex Mattiazzi, Jamie Zamprogno and Carl Sutherland 19-13.

In the other game Joe Straatman, Ray Spiller, Glenn Preston, and Rob Capelli beat Eddie Zanatta, Phil Davis, Paul Zamprogno and Tony Schubert 17-8. Paul Zamprogno acted as a sub while suffering with the effects of pneumonia. Two other players also played with the flu.

There was one game of social was played on Saturday afternoon with Margaret Harvey, Merrylea Wilson and Pam Moore beating Bill Larsen, Maree Ball and Rod Crome 15-5.

The A and B Pairs will be played on 8-9 June 8. This will be an open event. A nomination sheet is on the board. This will be a three bowl pairs event and is club selected. Nominations close on 1 June.

The club is hosting a visit from the Hamilton Bowls Club on Sunday, 2 June. Names should be placed on the sheet on the notice board. There are 22 visitors to match. The games will start at 12.30.

On Saturday there will be a barbecue for the District Sides teams. This will be followed by the trophy afternoon. Calendar for the coming weeks: Tuesday 21 May: turkey triples, Saturday 25 May: trophy afternoon, Saturday 1 June: social bowls; Sunday, 2 June: visit from Hamilton bowlers – 12.30 start, Saturday 8 June: A and B pairs, Sunday 9 June: A and B Pairs.

Warwick East

Nominations are now open for the Warwick East open singles competition being held on 22 June.

The club is also seeking expressions of interest in participating in a District Seven’s competition which will be held in Tenterfield on 29-30 June. At this stage the club is unaware of the format.

The mixed social bowls on Saturday saw four games of pairs and two of triples. The overall winner was Johnno Johnson and the runner-up was Ed Diery.

Today (Thursday 23 May) is the club’s monthly pairs competition. Now the cool weather is here, the starting time is 10am. As there are five Thursdays in this month, the next triples competition will be held for two weeks after this.

On Saturday the B Grade singles competition for both ladies and men will take place, with play beginning at 10 am. There will be mixed social bowls as usual for the rest of us, starting at 1 pm. As always, visitors will be made very welcome.

Stanthorpe Bowls Club

The monthly ‘Turkey Triples’ event was held at Stanthorpe on Tuesday, 14 May. Runners up for the day were the composite team of Jeff Alldridge. Glen Preston and ‘Jacko’ Jackson with Greg Hammond, Wendy Hurnall and David Rose of the Stanthorpe Bowls Club collecting the prize money for first place. The next ‘Turkey Triples’ event will be held on Tuesday, 11 June, starting at 10am. Teams can nominate by calling the club mobile on 0456459784.

On the Social Bowls scene, in a game of fours, the combination of Sylean Fairley, L Evans, Brian Brown and John Fairley had a five shot victory over the team of Steve Sheahan, Rocky Thompson, Greg Hammond and Gary Trevena defeating them by 17 to 12 and in a game of Triples.

Barry Murphy, Greg Hammond and Brian Brown had a convincing win over Helen Jones, Colin Denning and Len Girgenti winning 23-16.

The Club has nominated two teams to take part in the ‘Club Sevens’ event at Tenterfield on Saturday, 29-30 June. Seven players are required for each team comprising of two sets of pairs and one set of Triples. This format is a first-time event for the zone but it should prove to be an interesting and fun weekend. Congratulations to the SDMDBA for showing initiative to run the competition.

The Club Selected Fours event will be held 15-16 June. Entries close on Saturday, 8 June,the nomination form and conditions of play are up on the club notice board.

Warwick Bowls

Southern Cross Bowls Club has taken out the reinstated Crowar Shield by just three points over rivals Warwick Bowls Club.

Both of the Warwick-based clubs field 21 bowlers for the event held on Sunday.
