Through the hoops

Joy Newman has beaten Pauline Smith 26-19 in the Stanthorpe Association Croquet competition held on 11 June.

Newman and Smith battled it out around the first few hoops. Newman scored two peels plus an Irish peel, while Smith scored three peels (one being two balls through one hoop with two strokes). Newman got the lead of three hoops with one ball and Smith was unable to catch her to the final peg out. Newman won 26 – 19.

Golf Croquet – 22 May

Game one: Liz Ellway, Steve Jones and Shirley Page played against Dianne Jones, Kathy Hopgood and Jennifer Gleadhill.

D Jones scored a great jump shot to win a hoop, but unfortunately Ellway, S Jones and Page proved too strong, winning by 10 – 4. A jump shot is striking your ball to make it ‘jump’ over another ball to go though the hoop.

Game two: – Two sets of ‘pairs’ took to the court – D Jones and Hopgood played against Carol van Klareren and Page. And Gleadhill (playing two balls) played against Ellway and S Jones. D Jones and Hopgood scored seven hoops each, winning 14 – 9. While in the second pairing, S Jones scored eight hoops, and along with his partner, Ellway scoring six hoops, won 14 – 7.

Gateball – 14 June

Game One: Jenny Tunbridge, Hannah Widderick and Pauline Smith played against Joy Newman, Caroline Draper, Les Williams and across all four games, swapping the coloured balls (odds and evens) for the third and fourth games. While Tunbridge, Widderick and Smith scored four balls through gate two, Newman, Draper and Williams scored an agari, winning 10 – 9.

Game Two – Another close game – Newman, Williams and Draper had all their five balls active during the first round.

Tunbridge, Widderick and Smith only had two active, but had all five balls active during the third round. Newman, Williams and Draper scored one more ball through gate three, winning 10 – 9.

Game Three: Tunbridge, Widderick and Smith had three balls active during the first round, while Newman, Williams and Draper only managed two, and were unable to get all five balls active by the end of the game. Tunbridge, Widderick and Smith scored an agari, winning this game 11 – 4.

Game Four: Tunbridge, Widderick and Smith scored only one ball of their ball through gate one in the first round. Newman, Williams and Draper scored an agari. A close game again with Newman, Williams and Draper winning 10 – 9.
