Hat-trick for Abele helps Water Rats to victory

Warwick Water Rats are back in the winner’s circle with an impressive 38-24 win over Toowoomba Bears in their Darling Downs Rugby Union clash at Toowoomba on Saturday.

President Tess Cullen said for the second week in a row it was a game where the two halves differed greatly.

“The Rats went into half time losing 19-14,” she said.

“After a cracker of a second half though our boys got over the line four more times to steal the win from Toowoomba Bears.

“Brad Johnson defies his age yet again showing his creativity in attack and scoring a try in the process. Number eight Joe scored two tries this week with some very physical line breaks. Isikeli (Sike) was dangerous from the back field with some threatening kick returns.

“Our hat trick hero and player of the match, Alosio “Able“ Abele, scored our team’s first hat trick in nearly half a decade (we think).

“Abel showed us yet again his well balanced skill set with observant defence and dominant attacking style.”

Tries scored by Brad Johnson, Jolame (Joe) Vai and Alosio Abele (Abel), conversions kicked by Francis Nguyen.

She said the team returns to Risdon Oval thus weekend to take on Goondiwindi Rugby Union Club.

“This is first playing third which is sure to be a must watch game of the round in B Grade,” Cullen said.

“We are steady at third on the ladder. We have the talent to win and are just working through a few small issues in our playing style and injuries to keep performing well.”

Meanwhile planning is well under way for the club’s reunion round, which they are calling Return to Risdon, on 13 July.

“It will see us host three games (A, B and C Grade) of rugby and our 60th birthday celebration,” she said.

“It will be a massive event hopefully with lots of old players coming back including some from the original 1964 team.”
