Warwick Women’s Golf

Wednesday July 10, saw a good field of ladies vie for the trophy kindly sponsored by Brown Nolan and Watt Accountants.

Janine Stewart was the skilled golfer to take out the day, with a fine 38 points. Lyn McKillop next best with 36. Both great scores for a not-so-great day. Jill Barnes won the pro pin, shared with Kath Devereux, Donna Keogh, and Annice Payne.

While these ladies were enjoying the Warwick course, we had a contingent of Ladies represent us at the Oakey Open Day Zone Pennants. Our team of, Jo McAntee, Melanie McLennan, Roslyn Darton, Maria Carey, and Wendy Rhea, gained us another 7 valuable points towards the zone pennants tally. Well Done Ladies. Melanie won the Best gross for Division 1, Maria Carey won the best nett for division 3, & Jo bringing home an approach pin for her great efforts. The next Open Day is Cabarlah next Tuesday, so we wish our team well for that event.

Saturday 12 July, saw a great field of ladies play a Single Stableford for an event kindly sponsored by Stephen and Julie Lamb of Warwick Cleaning and Catering products. Thankyou for your continued sponsorship of the ladies here in Warwick, it is so very much appreciated. Maria Carey is the one who will be whipping around home cleaning away, as she scored a fantastic 39 points, 22 of them on the back 9. The runner up for the day was Donna Keogh who had 37 great points also having a great back 9 with 21 points. Maria also won the pro pin, sharing it with Molly Seibel, Trish Bell, & Di Evans.

Also, on Saturday we saw the semifinals of the Single Handicap Matchplay. Congratulations to Narelle Norris and Jill Barnes for well fought out games to secure their positions in the final which was held on Sunday. Jill and Narelle had a game well worthy of the title “Final“, with Narelle securing the honour board event one up on the 18th hole.

Jill had the lead on the turn, but the whole game there was nothing in the scores, with Narelle coming home just that little bit stronger. Congratulations Ladies, another of our 2024 Honour board events over, and a well supported one at that.

Wednesday they will play a Single Stableford, and Saturday with be a Canadian foursome. For those who need a gentle reminder of how that one rolls both players in the team tee off, then the best of the two drives is selected, and from that point, the team of two players play alternate shots until the ball is holed out.

Good luck with that one ladies, play well, but most of all have fun.

Warwick Sporters

In complete contrast to last week’s somewhat miserable weather a glorious Winters Day greeted 71 starters in the Stableford game.

Danny Lyons managed to see off Greg Carey in a count back to take the winners spoils relegating Carey to second spot.

There was a log jam in the run down with Peter Gribbin, Mal Galloway, Stuart Wade, Michael Payne, Mike Hoskin and Adrian King all on 36 points. Things were rounded out with Doug Rickert and Jim Saunders on 35 points.

The Pro Pin 13th winners were Jesse Ollerton, Peter Farrell and Jesse Harris.

The nearest the pins showed that Troy Alsford’s short game was in good order as he took out the NTP’s on the 5th, 9th and 16th. The 7th Darrell Bain and 11th Jesse Ollerton.

Stanthorpe Golf and Country Club

The Green Keeper’s Revenge, a very demanding competition, was played at the Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday.

The ‘green’ on the 7th/16th was both fast and furious. If the chip or putt was not absolutely correct in line and length then it was ‘good night, Irene’ and off the green the ball would slide. And so, it is rightly called, ‘The Green Keeper’s Revenge.’ It was the club’s own green keeper, Bill Pyne, who set up the course and sponsored the day’s golf. He did however give the golfers a significant challenge on the 7/16th green.

The crisp weather meant that some regular players had other ‘commitments’ on the day but those who braved the conditions were well rewarded with a bracing days golf and the winners, thanks to Bill Payne, were very generously rewarded. Congratulations to the Ladies; Loraine Evans who won on a count back with Nikki Waterworth and third place to Linda Kelly. Ladies pin shots went to hawk eye Nikki Waterworth for the 2/11, 12 and 17th and Loraine Evans for the dreaded 7/16th .

The Men’s winners, winner was Zac Hendry and on a count back, second place to AJ Grasso and third to Eric Ree. Ree wisely left his three wood at home and has become the five-iron specialist. The countdown went to Brendan McMillan and Keith Allen. Pin Shots; 3rd Matt Penn, 12th Angleo Maugeri, 1/10th Rod Paye, 5/14th Richard Reardon and 9/18th Clayton Frank.

At the presentation we took the time to cover some other Stanthorpe golf news. Luke Reardon, caddy to Jason Day, is off to compete with Jason at the Paris Olympic Games. That makes two Stanthorpians at the Olympics. The next big news was via the proud father of Hannah Reeves (photo), Rob Reeves. Hannah is currently in the USA playing a number of amateur championships and overnight came second in the Women’s Western Amateur Championships in Illinois. The club is so happy for Hannah and so proud of her achievements.

Next Saturday, 20 July will be a single stroke event sponsored by Reece Plumbing with thanks to Tom Fittock for coordinating the event.
