Warwick Water Rats will guarantee their spot the Downs Rugby Union reserve grade finals series if they beat Toowoomba rangers at Gatton this weekend.

“This week is our last regular season game and we are fourth on the ladder,” club president Tess Cullen said.

“We will play Toowoomba Rangers at Gatton. If we maintain this we will qualify for finals. “Location of first round finals depends on first in A Grade – likely Goondiwindi. We are battling some injuries at the moment but still working hard to make sure we win.”

The Water Rats suffered a loss at the weekend going down 20-12 to the St George Frillnecks.

“It was a wet and wild battle out west ended in a strong Frillnecks St George Rugby Union Club side just beating the Water Rats,” she said.

“A very fierce hit out between two very physical sides. Tries by Dean Cullen, Jay Mitchell off a great kick from Hamish Swift and conversion by Tom Gillespie

“Big number eight, Jolame (Joe) Vai, was a key player again with a huge impact in attack and some very solid defence.

“Best performing back again is Jay Mitchell with some absolutely piercing runs in attack, resulting in a try. Captain Louw Wiid, leading by example with a tireless workrate in both attack and defence, earns himself this week’s player of the match.

“St George away is always a tough game but it is important to recognise our growth as a team and as a club. This time last year, we went out to St George with only 15 guys who played their absolute heart out but lost 89-0, one of our worst losses in decades. Despite the narrow loss today, we are so proud of the boys.”
