Warwick Wolves have shown just how far they have come in their first season in the Senior Men’s Soccer Queensland Premier League Three with an impressive one-all draw with top four side Highfield at Queens Park Warwick on Sunday.

“We were really happy with that,” club president Dom Benz said.

“It was a really good game, well fought. We had two really good opportunities late in the game but we just didn’t convert them. They were well-played passages, crosses from the right side but the striker couldn’t get a foot to it.

“They scored first in the first half and then we equalised though striker Matthew Carey and then it was an arm wrestle in the second half. There are a few wounded soldiers after the game but they did well to hold them out.”

He said it really showed how far they had come from the start of the season, in a season they knew would be a learning curve after being promoted at the end of last season.

“We are really moving forward,” he said.

“Something I was really impressed by was players were coming off the field were asking if we could continue to train through the off season and not have a break. They just want to keep power through because they can see that we are getting there in terms of strength and our ball skills, it’s definitely lifted. Finishing off the season on a strong note I’d say is really good and I’m encouraged by the fact that they are already planning for next year, they are not by any means saying they’ve had enough, let’s take a step back they are really improving and they can see it.

“It’s fantastic, I’m really really excited about it.”

The Under 23s got off to a good start, scoring the first goal of the game but as they tired towards the end of the match Highfield took advantage scoring four late goals to run out 5-1 victors in the end.

“It was one-all at half time – Percy Manfield scored for us there in the 20th minute,” he said.

“We kept the score at one-all until the 70th minute and then in the last 20 minutes they just got away from us.

“Their fitness came through and they scored four goals in 20 minutes and took advantage of our fitness level.”

The men will play their last game of the season this weekend against Rockville. However the women have two more games left, Highfield Gold this weekend and a catch up match against Rockville.

Their last home game, against Chinchilla on Sunday saw them go down 4-2.

“We were unfortunately outplayed on Sunday going 4-2 down against Chinchilla,” Benz said.

“Despite many decent shots on goal we only managed one.

“We are hoping to end the season strong with our last two games.”

To celebrate the club’s last home game of the year Samantha Wantling was on-hand to capture all the action, including our own journalist Lucy Waldron who has played her first season with the club this year.
