Stanthorpe High School student, Ewan Keith, has been selected in the 20-strong Queensland Schools team to contest the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships being held in Armidale at the end of September.

Keith, from Wyberba, put in some good performances at the Queensland Schools Championships in July to secure his spot in the Senior Boys section of the team. While there are other members of the team from the Darling Downs, Keith is the only Southern Downs/Granite Belt athlete.

He was introduced to orienteering as a junior in 2019 while still at the Ballandean State School and later joined the local Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Club and went on to participate regularly in local, state and national events.

He was named as a reserve in last year’s Queensland team so is continuing his upward progression in making this year’s team.

The terrain around Armidale is very similar to the Granite Belt so Ewan should feel confident competing in familiar granite country.

He will have the opportunity to test out his skills at a local club event at Lode Creek, outside Stanthorpe, on 18 August and then at the Queensland Orienteering Championships which this year are being held on 21/22 September north of Dalveen, a week before the Australian Championships.
