Gremlins junior semi finals

It was a day of great football at Stanthorpe for the junior semi-finals. (427899; Samantha Wantling).

It was a celebration of football as the Stanthorpe Gremlins hosted the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League semi-finals at Sullivan Oval on Saturday.

“It was an amazing game day of football,” Gremlins president Roger O’Brien said.

“There were 10 games of footy from Under 13s up – all the international games. It was great footy and all the club’s were involved which was wonderful for the district and there were plenty of supporters. It was a nice day up here.

“We put on a perfect day and there was some good competitive football played in all age groups.”

The news wasn’t so great for the Gremlins on the field though.

“Our under 15 girls had a wonderful year, improved a lot but Wattles got us 12-6 so we’ve bowed out of the semis unfortunately but they should be very proud of what they’ve done this year, they are a great group of girls – as a club we are very proud of them,” he said of the club’s last chance of a grand final berth this year.

“And that’s us, we’re done for the year – in the seniors as well. The last piece of our puzzle now is the presentation day on Sunday 8 September up at the club host, for all grades juniors and seniors. It will be a nice way to finish off the year.”

The next preliminary final will be held at Goondiwindi this weekend with Inglewood hosting the grand final the weekend after.

He said most of the club’s still had teams in the running in different grades.

“It’s been a nice competitive competition this year in all grades,” O’Brien said.

Given that two teams dropped out of the senior competition before the start of the season – and one is unlikely to return, O’Brien said it was heartening that the juniors were still going strong.
