Clarke nabs stableford win

Saturday's Stanthorpe men's runner up AJ Grasso with the club captain and sponsors.

Keith Clarke has taken out the Warwick Sporters Stableford for the past week.

Seventy golfers took part with Clarke taking the honours with 41 points.

Second-place was harder to determined with three players all finishing on 39 points and a countback needed to separate them.

Barbara Golf Club visitor Craig Marriott was declared Clarke’s runner up relegating Darrell Bain and Con Seibel to a ball each in the run down.

Others to feature in the run down were Geoff Hinze 38 points, Jesse Ollerton, Mark Simmonds and Doug Wilson 37 points and rounding things out on 36 points were Garry Hanson and Laurie King.

Stanthorpe Golf

Readers of this column may recall an old movie, ‘A Star is Born’ which has recently had a remake. Well, Stanthorpe Golf Club is witnessing its own version of a Star is Born.

On Saturday, 14 September the Old Guard looked on in grudging admiration as young Zac Hendry put on a stellar performance to win head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Hedry’s ‘Space X’ performance totalled 43 Stableford points.

He was followed by another young gun A J Grasso on 40 points, putting the Old Boys on notice.

Fortunately Barry Hughes came in with the very tidy 39 and preserved the dignity of the Old Guard.

The men’s pins and pro pins went to Matt Waterworth, Len Leigh, Michael O’Brien, Matt Penn and Dave Reeves.

What made Saturday’s golf such a star light success for the Men’s and Women’s competitions was the generous sponsorship of the ever smiling, Laraine Gurnett and Neta Thouard. The duo ladies are great supporters of the Club and the game and the club is indebted to them for their support.

Laraine Gurnett’s love of the game didn’t stop at sponsorship – she decided to win as well. Hot on Gurnett’s heels were Mei Bell and Lisa Stuart.

The Pin and Pro Pins went to Mei Bell, Neta Thouard, Lisa Stuart and Helen Jones.

Speaking of ‘A Star is Born,’ the Stanthorpe Ladies Golf can boast of Hanna Reeves who launched from Stanthorpe and is one of the top flight stars of women’s golf in Australia. Next Saturday’s 21 September competition is the Laurie Newley Memorial Day sponsored by the Newley family.
