It was not only John Denver who longed for Country Roads to take him home but this week the Stanthorpe Golf Club has had a number of players travel the country roads back to Australia and back to Stanthorpe.
Welcome back to Mark McCosker, played in Ireland, Peter Moll, played in Scotland, Raymond Adams, played in Cornwell, Eric Ree who didn’t exactly play in Spain but enough of Jon Rham rubbed off ‘just by being there’ that he put in a great performance on Saturday.
However, the ‘Take Me Home Country Road’ Winner goes to Santo Cavallaro. Santo flew in overnight from Italy, landing at 5:30am in Brisbane, drove to Stanthorpe just in time to tee off. Santo – you are the true golfer!
It was an unmitigated pleasure to welcome Aaron Simmers back to the course after a long illness.
Aaron’s presence lifted the spirits of the whole club.
And welcome to a new club member Jason Ward. Ward has moved here from the Gold Coast as any sensible person would.
The day’s golf was sponsored by the Newley Family. The Newley family have had a special association with the Club over many years and it is always an honour to remember the contribution of Laurie Newley to Stanthorpe Golf.
Ladies’ Golf: The Writer happened to be behind a group of ladies at the tee off. After about ten minutes we lost sight of them. They were so fast compared to the ‘gentlemen’ golfers. Indeed, the ladies are the winners by a ‘country mile.’ Linda Kelly won by a country mile on 40 Stableford points, followed by Mei Bell on 38. Well done ladies. Pin Shots to Linda Kelly, Lynette Ludlow, Lisa Stuart and Neta Thouard.
Men’s Golf: Big hitting Hayden Smith won on a count back to Kev Rowlings each on 37 Stableford points. Pin Shots to Mattie Burgess, Zac Hendry, Max Hunter, Tod Beckett and Ivan Juriss with two pin shots.
Next week Mens Canadian Foursome, sponsorship in conjunction Peter Howard Memorial Day Mal, Fred, and Terry Howard. Ladies Canadian Foursome sponsored by Mei Bell.

Lisa Stuart, once again had an excellent round of golf and won the event with 34 points. Following closely was Neta Thouard with 33 points. Lisa had an impressive game around the greens also and claimed the pin shots on the 3rd, 7/16th and the 17th. Helen Jones won the pin shot on the 12th and Neta was closest to the pin on the 5/14th.
